Greetings from Director Tom Hui Greetings
As 2015 is underway,
we are excited for the new opportunities, programs and projects this New Year brings. The Department of Building Inspection's main purpose is to protect building
and housing safety by ensuring code compliance in construction and maintenance of the City's existing 200,000 buildings. DBI continues its commitment to efficiently issuing and approving permits, and ensuring new and old buildings are constructed using the latest building codes. We will do this while continuing to conduct building, plumbing, electrical and housing inspections.

Along with the New Year, I'm excited to introduce to you DBI's first e-newsletter issue. Our goal is to keep you up-to-date with valuable information on our services and programs as well as code changes and legislation affecting building and life safety.  Whether you're a regular DBI visitor or a fresh face to our services, we welcome you to enjoy our online publication. We hope to see you in our offices today as we continue to offer our professional and dedicated customer service.

Cheers to a happy, healthy, and successful year ahead.

Best,

Tom

BuildingBoom2014

In 2014, we saw an increase in the number of residential units coming into the market. It has been an exciting time for San Francisco as more than 4,000 units came online through the construction of new or expansion of existing properties. There are more projects in the queue for 2015, which will bring another wave of new units online. Read More.

ColdWeatherWhen the Weather is Frightful
It may get cold and frigid outside but that doesn't mean your apartment should be. Heat is not merely a luxury but necessary for habitability. Staying warm can significantly impact your health. Without proper warmth (at minimum 68F and above), people are more susceptible to colds, flus, and other serious health conditions. If your rental unit is not properly heated, call the Housing Inspection Services Division at (415) 558-6220 to file your complaint. Once we receive your complaint, one of our Housing Inspectors will contact you to arrange a visit to your building. We want you and your family to stay warm. Read More.
In-LawUnitsLegalize Your In-Law Unit Today!
A new ordinance that took effect in May 2014 may help renters find affordable housing in the city of San Francisco. This voluntary program allows unauthorized dwelling units or, "in-law" units to be legalized with proper permits. As a result, thousands of existing in-law units may legally enter the housing market. Stop by Counter 10 at 1660 Mission Street for an easy and free initial screening. Read More.
