A Message from our CEO:
Dear Relatives,
Cante Waste ya Nape Ciyu zape ye ("
I shake your hand with a good heart" in Lakota). As we enter spring, Native Americans in Philanthropy (NAP) has been focused on
Philanthropy Institute "Raising Impact with Native Voices" on May 25-27, 2016 in San Diego, CA on focusing on
Impact,
Advocacy,
Civic Engagement and
Economic Development.
This conference will be quite different from our previous endeavors, in that it is entirely focused on the intersections of philanthropy focusing on an issue driven framework for impact investing. We are inviting funders, tribal philanthropy and tribal leaders to hear about the work of our Native community partners, as well as tying it into the work our Native funder partners to leverage resources and collective partnerships.
We have confirmed speakers:
- William (Bill) Mendoza, Executive Director of the White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education
- Robert K. Ross, M.D., President and CEO for The California Endowment
- Twila True, Founder, True Sioux Foundation, True Investments LLC
- Edgar Villanueva, Vice President of Programs and Advocacy, Schott Foundation for Public Education
- Erik Stegman, Executive Director, The Center for Native American Youth
In addition to this work, we are also hosting gatherings of working groups and networks:
- Generation Indigenous - sharing the collective work of philanthropic sector on the White House Initiative Generation Indigenous (Gen-I).
- Native Elected Officials - working group of Native elected officials (including state, city and tribally elected), who will also learn about the current work at the intersection of public policy and philanthropy.
- Tribal Philanthropy - A facilitated dialog with decision-makers in tribal giving programs to discuss tribal philanthropy trends, challenges and opportunities.
- Native Program Officers - More information to come.
Lastly, our Program Manager Kathy Forliti has moved on from Native Americans in Philanthropy as of February 29. Kathy has served in a variety of capacities at NAP over the past six years including: intern, administrative assistant, program associate and program manager. We thank Kathy for service to NAP membership and wish her all the best in the future.
Wopila (deep gratitude),
Sarah Eagle Heart
