Topping Off
Paul Fischione & Jen Landau signing the beam

Some traditions fade into the background, but every once and awhile they are brought back into style.

Landau Superintendent Cory Bruce decided to do his own topping-off ceremony, which commemorates the last piece of steel put into place, at E.A. Fischione Instruments.  In this case it was a steel stud.

Cory hosted a cookout for his crew and the Fischione employees on a sunny Friday afternoon, cooking hamburgers and hot dogs on a grill he converted from a pick-up truck tool box. All of the workers, including Project Manager Jen Landau, and Fischione employees took turns signing the steel stud before it was put into place, leaving their legacy with the new building.

To Paul:
The 2015 Paul Slowik Memorial Shoot
Architect Paul Slowik

This past June, our industry lost a dear friend and well-respected architect, Paul Slowik, to cancer. We wanted to honor our friend's memory by doing something he loved. This year our annual Customer Appreciation Shoot became the Paul Slowik Memorial Shoot, raising money to benefit the Passavant Hospital Foundation, an organization in which Paul was very active.  His father designed the original Passavant Hospital, and Paul was the fundraising chair, so teaming with the Foundation felt like a perfect way to honor Paul.

We were fortunate to have a beautiful day for our event. This year, we had silent auction items wtih some really great prizes, like Pirates tickets, a Steelers basket, one-night stay at a hotel, and even a basket of "Paul's Favorite Things." Thank you to Joyce Slowik, who gathered and made the baskets, and to her family and friends for attending the event. The following companies also donated gifts to our event:
  • Blumling & Gusky
  • Overhead Door
  • Renick Brothers Mechanical Contractors
  • Carl Taylor & Sons
  • A.G. Mauro
  • J&K Door & Hardware
  • Construction Tool Service
  • DB Consulting
  • Atlas Supply Company
  • Interior Supply, Inc.
  • Sunoco Mini Mart, Perry Highway
The great turnout and level of support we received for the event truly attests to Paul's character and his impact on the industry.

A special thank you to all of our sponsors, for without their generosity, this event would not have been possible:
  • MedExpress
  • UPMC
  • Heritage Valley Health Systems
  • Architectural Innovations
  • E.A. Fischione Instruments
  • Radelet McCarthy Polletta
  • Steve and Mary Bishop
