Last week, we talked about good problems to have. More good problems this week! During the second afternoon breakout, we'll choose between four sessions that are focused on leadership, digital workplace, data monetization, and data science. In this newsletter, we'll briefly discuss the last two.

The 2015 Program is Now Available!

Back in the 1950s, Bob Merrill wrote the hit song, "How Much is that Doggie in the Window?" Today, metaphorically speaking, that doggie in the window is your data! Others see that you have data, and look at it longingly. If only it were for sale! Can you safely make your data available to others and reap some extra revenue? The panel, "Cashing in on Your Data" will discuss how CIOs might be able to do just that.

Why are data scientists soooo sexy? You may think that data science is all about statistics, algorithms, massive datasets and machine learning, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Data science is also about running large-scale experiments to surmise every intimate detail about how you walk, talk, look, feel and vote. Norbert Wiener, Professor of Mathematics at MIT, once said that, "Progress imposes not only new possibilities for the future but new restrictions." Understanding the opportunities and challenges inherent in "Big Data" experiments that leverage modern analytics is the topic of this the breakout "The Future (and Potential) of Large-Scale Digital Experiments.

Bring a Friend and Save!

These are just two of four sessions running simultaneously at the 2015 MIT Sloan CIO Symposium. Can't be in two (or more) places at once? Bring a friend! If two (or more) people register now through May 13 at full price, we'll refund 50% on each ticket!  Just send an email to [email protected] with the names and order numbers. (Rebate requests must be received by May 20. Please allow up to 14 days for processing.)

Are you interested in attending the Cloud or Healthcare Panel at lunchtime? These breakouts have limited capacity, and if you don't register soon or haven't indicated your preference, you might not be able to get a ticket. Register now, and avoid late fees!

To check your session preferences if you're already registered, follow the instructions here.

Cashing in on Your Data

In a digital economy, data (and the information it produces) is one of a company's most important assets-an asset companies are increasingly turning into a revenue stream. What types of data, whether generated from existing products and services or created from digitization, best lend themselves to monetization? We will explore the opportunities and challenges companies face when implementing data monetization strategies. We will also discuss the capabilities and skills needed for successful monetization.

Barbara Haley Wixom, MIT Sloan Center for Information Systems Research will moderate the panel including:

The Future (and Potential) of Large-Scale Digital Experiments

We are on the brink of a revolution in our understanding of human behavior, in part driven by a newfound ability to design and analyze complex social experiments at population scale. But digital experimentation is much more than just technology and analytics-it creates a powerful tool that helps us understand how to create influence over changing behavior on a broad scale through peer-to-peer interaction and communication. This session will focus on the mechanics and ethics of cheap, rapid, digital experimentation at scale, the implications for managers as well as workers, the benefits as well as the costs, and how organizations may use experimentation to understand the implications of different business strategies and public policies.
