Autumn is a Great Time to Plan

Autumn leaves The calendar pages turn and suddenly, we're into autumn. Now that the kids are back in school and summer vacations are over, it's a great time to plan.

According to Mary Beth Storjohann of the website DailyFinance, here are some things to think about as the days grow shorter and we move into fall:

  • Take a look at your employer's benefits plan. Are you taking advantage of your 401(K) plan and any matches your employer may provide? How about insurance options? Don't leave money on the table (and if you need help evaluating your plan, please give us a call at 630-653-1616).
  • Plan for holiday spending. This is a great time to set up an automatic savings plan to sock away a little money toward the holidays. Then you won't be saddled with debt at the first of the year.
  • Maximize your retirement savings. Rather than waiting until the end of December to scramble and catch up, take a look at your contributions now. Make sure you've maximized your opportunity to contribute to your retirement savings.
  • Weatherproof your home. While you're enjoying the fall colors, take a look around your home. Do you need to insulate? Caulk? Weatherstrip the doors and windows? All of these activities will help you save on bills this coming winter.

If we can help you with your planning, whether it's a review of your benefits plan or your savings goals, please give us a call. We're eager to be of service--except for the window caulking, that is.

Individual Tax-Planning Guidelines

Just as autumn is a great time to plan for savings and spending, it's also an ideal time to begin tax planning for the rest of the year. If you're an individual or family, here are some things to think about as you prepare for the end of the year.

You may have some choices to make regarding decisions on when to realize your income:

  • If you receive a bonus, should you take it this year or defer until January 2015?
  • Should you sell any stock with built-in gains or wait until next year?
  • When can you take a distribution from your IRA?
  • When is it appropriate to convert a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA?

You may be deciding when or if to take certain deductions:

  • If you're planning a charity donation, does it make sense to make that contribution this year or wait until next year?
  • Can you make additional contributions to your IRA?
  • Would it make sense to pay any college tuition early to maximize a deduction or a tax credit?

Please let us help you answer these questions and more as you prepare for end-of-year planning. Call or e-mail us to set up your appointment. Also, we'll be reaching out to you in the coming weeks with your 2014 tax organizer.

Next month we'll cover tax-planning guidelines for business owners.

Save the Date: TPC Holiday Gift Drive Scheduled for Dec. 6

Once again we're proud to be a sponsor of the Teen Parent Connection (TPC) Holiday Gift Drive, scheduled for Saturday, December 6. In cooperation with our partners at Wheaton Bank & Trust we'll be collecting toys, supplies for the Parent Pantry and gift cards to help make the holidays a joy for young parents and their families in the area. More details to follow!

Last year, thanks to your generosity and the commitment of our staff, we collected gifts and supplies that contributed to TPC's Parent Pantry. Here is just a sample of some of the heartfelt thank-you notes we received from TPC parents and their families following our Holiday Gift Drive last year:

"My child and I really appreciate your generosity this holiday season. Thank you for your gifts!"

"This year has been very hard on me and my son. There wasn't going to be a Christmas tree at my house this year because I was not going to be able to buy my son anything! Thank you so much, especially for the game my son has been asking for. You're my son's Santa--thank you for giving us a Christmas."

"I deeply appreciate the donation of all the toys. My daughter will love the puzzle, blocks and play-doh. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!"

To those of you who donated last year, we thank you. For those who would like to donate this year, please stay tuned for more details about how you can help young parents and their families this holiday season.
