The "Dodgin' 4 Dough" tournament lasted three days (see story, "Our People Make a Difference") and raised $15,000 for missions for Good Shepherd Church in Naperville. Mathieson, Moyski, Celer & Co. was a proud sponsor!

Here are some highlights from the event featuring all age groups:

Team Huddle

Good Sportsmanship

Congratulations to Coach Betty Fogle of "Betty & The Boys" who coached the MMC & Co. Team and to all from the company and their families and friends who participated.

Special thanks to Kimberly Bennema of Good Shepherd Church for the team photos.

Resolving to Keep Those Resolutions
Now that we're well into 2014, those resolutions we made so optimistically on New Year's Day may be fading or gone altogether. But knowing how we're wired as human beings may help us in keeping those commitments throughout the year.

According to Jesse Singal in his blogpost on Newsweek/The Daily Beast, resolutions are made to be broken... but here are some tips to help them stick:
  1. Understand the power of defaults. Like saving money through automatic deposits, creating defaults saves us the time and agony of making a decision. If more exercise is part of your New Year's resolutions, choose a gym closer to home, find a buddy, establish a routine: all of these are "defaults" that help us keep our promises to ourselves.
  2. Make it a social thing. We are pack animals, and the support of family and friends is a huge determinant in whether we'll keep our commitments. Find your "tribe" and hang with them, whether it's a book group or a running club.
  3. Recognize that we're loss-averse. Perverse as it sounds, we're more motivated by the threat of loss than the specter of gain. So put some money on the line (health club membership may count) to motivate you toward your goal.

Whatever your resolutions, we wish you good luck! And if one of those goals was to get your taxes done early, we're here for you.

New Options for

Home Office Deductions

There's good news this year for folks who have home offices. The Internal Revenue Service now offers a simplified home office deduction for entrepreneurs who use a portion of their homes exclusively for business reasons.

In a nutshell, home office expenses may be deductible if part of the home is used regularly and exclusively as 1) a principal place of business for any trade or business of the taxpayer or 2) as a place of business which is used by patients, clients, or customers in meeting or dealing with the taxpayer in the normal course of his trade or business.

The simplified option, at this time, is capped at $1,500 per year based on $5 a square foot up to 300 square feet. However, it's important to weigh the benefits of using the new simplified option against computing the home office deduction under the regular Tax Code rules.

Let us help you decide which option is best for you and your business this tax year.

Our People Make a Difference

One of the joys of being a community-based accounting & financial services firm is the ability to support our employees and their projects. Mathieson, Moyski, Celer & Co. once again was a sponsor of "Dodgin' 4 Dough," a fund-raiser for Betty Fogle's church, Good Shepherd Church in Naperville. Betty, a CPA and one of our managers, corralled a team from MMC & Co., and the money raised at this rambunctious dodge-ball tournament will go to support youth missions in Danville, IL, and Zacapa, Guatemala.

Our team, coached by Betty, was comprised of Brett Mathieson, Sean LaFortune and Matt Lupoalong with a few ringers: Gina Kelly's husband Kevin and son Justin and his friend Brett Newburg from Moline, IL, joined the team along with Brett's brother Scott. Gina's on our accounting services staff and she recruited her family who added some firepower to the MMC & Co. team, affectionately nicknamed "Betty & the Boys."

A total of 78 teams played during three-day event (see side-bar, left) and more than $15,000 was raised for this worthy effort.

This winter has proven to be quite a challenge here in Wheaton and surrounding communities... we hope this finds you safe and warm amidst the "Polar Vortex" and its accompanying negative-degree temperatures and snow drifts.

And while most people think of this season as winter, we think of it as "tax season!" We look forward to being of service to you in the coming months and appreciate your trust and your business.
