A BIG FESTIVAL WEEKEND
TIFTON'S ARTS IN BLACK, ASHBURN'S FIRE ANT FESTIVAL
Spring has arrived, and the season of outdoor festivals has begun.
This weekend brings both the annual Arts in Black Festival in Tifton and the annual Fire Ant Festival in Ashburn.
Arts in Black will be celebrated all day Saturday with entertainment, art and vendors at Fulwood Park; festivities actually begin at 7 p.m. today (Friday) with the local talent show at the Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts. Recording artist JRain will be the featured entertainment.
Special guests at the festival in the park include comedian Michael Prince, recording artists Live Five Band and Znday from Atlanta.
Weekend festivities culminate with the Poetry Recitation Competition on Sunday, March 29, at 3 p.m. at the Tift County Recreation Department. Special guests during the afternoon will be Poetic Magic and WordPlay Youth Poetry.
Meanwhile up the road in Ashburn, the Fire Ant Festival is underway, known for its wacky and off-the-wall activities, including the fire ant calling contest, the giant fire ant maze, carnival, arts and crafts, fireworks, bands, photo contest, art contest, health fair, and BBQ cookoff. The Fire Ant Festival also begins today (Friday) at 6:30 p.m. with a Lip Sync Contest, followed by a concert, and fireworks in Heritage Park. On Saturday, entertainment continues all day, including the Todd Allen Herendeen Band at noon and 2 p.m., the Men's Panty Hose Contest, and a street dance at 7 p.m. with the Dr. Doctor Band.

ABAC A TREE CAMPUS USA
The campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and a number of other Georgia campuses have been recognized for their commitment to caring for and managing their trees. ABAC was named one of Georgia's "Tree Campus USA" communities. The campus also received this recognition in 2014.
ABAC replaced 19 trees as part of the newly implemented tree removal request form, resulting in the

planting of 37 new trees, which helped meet the standards necessary to be a
Tree Campus USA. A new
27-acre arboretum is being mapped out and developed as well.
The Tree Campus USA program, administered by the Arbor Day Foundation in Lincoln, Neb., provides the framework for community forestry management for college campuses across America that meet requirements, including the establishment of a tree board, a campus tree care plan, specific spending levels for urban forestry, service learning and planned Arbor Day celebrations.
There are 14 tree campuses in Georgia. Nationwide, more than 220 Tree Campus USA communities serve as home to millions of students.
"Trees clean our air, filter our water and keep us healthy by providing shade, along with countless opportunities to enjoy recreation and natural beauty," said Robert Farris, director of the Georgia Forestry Commission. "The students and faculty of ABAC can take pride in their campus leaders' commitment to trees and forested land -- on Arbor Day and every other day of the year."

VIDEO: 'What We Ain't Got' - Home Free
|
Home Free this past week released its new music video for "What We Ain't Got," a cover of a Jake Owen song. The a cappella country quintet matches Owen's stripped-down, somber arrangement, removing the instrumentation and adding it back in with their vocal harmonies.
The video features clean shots of the band sitting in a simply-decorated room mixed with close-up footage of the members singing. In all of the scenes, movement comes from the camera rather than from the band members, highlighting the importance of the song's lyrics and harmonies.
The song was penned by Travis Meadows and Travis Jerome Goff; Home Free member Tim Foust composed the group's a cappella arrangement.
Home Free released its debut album, "Crazy Life," in 2014. The Minnesota-based group recently announced that they are set to make their Grand Ole Opry debut on July 17.
