Managing Crucial Conversations

Whether you're running your own business, you're part of a team at work or you're in a family, sooner or later you'll have to manage a "crucial conversation." Our first instinct may be avoidance--or we lash out. According to Sarah Green Carmichael of the Harvard Business Review, we may fall into old, ineffective habits like the combat mentality, losing sight of our goal or getting "hooked" by someone pointing out our blind spots.

Joseph Grenny is one of the co-authors of the best-selling book Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High. A gifted speaker and trainer, Mr. Grenny uses the STATE acronym to help leaders and their teams manage those "elephant in the room" conversations:
Share your facts
Tell your story
Ask for others' paths
Talk tentatively
Encourage testing

When opinions vary, emotions run strong and the stakes are high, you're staring into the face of a crucial conversation. According to Mr. Grenny, people who master the ability  to handle those difficult conversations can kick-start their careers, strengthen relationships and even improve their health.
Good News for Illinois Taxpayers

Illinois taxpayers have some good news in 2015!  Rates are decreasing for corporate and personal income taxes.
The tax rate for corporations is decreasing from 7% to 5.25%.
The tax rate for individuals, trusts, and estates is decreasing from 5% to 3.75%. The new income tax rates apply to exempt organizations with unrelated business income.

The "replacement tax" rates of 2.5% for corporations and 1.5% for S corporations, partnerships, and trusts remain the same.
Our People Make a Difference

We had a busy summer with school district audits, tax deadlines (yes, it isn't only April 15!) and construction here in the office to accommodate our growing team. In addition to meeting the demands of work, our people were also busy making a difference in our community and around the globe.

Brian Eisenmenger, CPA ,
traveled to Wisla, Poland, to volunteer at the  European Leadership Forum, a faith-based organization that seeks to serve and equip Christian leaders. Brian said this trip fulfilled a lifelong dream to travel the world and to make a difference.

"One of the things I learned is that the European church has the same struggles as the American church but on a much larger scale," he said. "Also, these leaders hunger for things we take for granted, such as books," he said, adding that the on-site bookstore was hugely popular.

"One of the most memorable things [about the trip] was my visit to Auschwitz," Brian shared. "It was moving and surreal to walk on the grounds of the largest graveyard in the history of mankind. The experience was deeply humbling."

Ron Austin, CPA, was appointed president of the board
of CASA of DuPage in July. Ron has been an active volunteer for the past four years, three of them as a member of the executive committee.
"CASA is honored to have Ron Austin serving as president of our board of directors," said Lisa Drake, executive director of CASA. "Whether it's helping at an event or reviewing important policies or financial documents, Ron is our guy.

"Mathieson, Moyski, Austin & Co. is very community-focused and CASA considers itself lucky to have Ron, especially, working on our behalf," Lisa said.
