Driver and Passenger Safety

Safety in a vehicles for hire is an important issue for the industry. Passengers and drivers must both be able to trust that if the need arises they can request emergency assistance. Recent incidents of robberies and assaults on drivers is of great concern.The DC Taxicab Commission is proceeding swiftly with regulations to reduce the cost and expand the options for safety devices in vehicles. We are making progress with enforcement against illegal operators and want to remind passengers to only use vehicles for hire that have the proper identification.



Metropolitan Police Academy DCTC Inspector Training 

The DC Taxicab Commission Enforcement staff recently spent a week at the Metropolitan Police Academy undergoing intense training focused on enforcement policy, practices and procedures. Topics covered by MPD instructors included vehicular traffic stops, report preparation, appearance, conduct and other law enforcement professional standards. The intent is to better serve the industry and public while performing their daily duties and responsibilities.





International Association of Transportation Regulators Conference

The  DC Taxicab Commission representatives attended the 28th Annual Conference of the International Association of Transportation Regulators (IATR) at the end of September. Panel discussions were held about various topics relevant to the vehicle for hire industry including:
  • The Future of For-Hire Ground Transportation
  • Vehicle Technology
  • Best Practices for Effective Safety Standards
  • Trip Data, Passenger Privacy and Consumer Security
  • Wheelchair Accessible Service
  • New Approaches to Regulation

Driver Appreciation Video

In an effort to recognize the hardworking drivers of the vehicle-for-hire industry, the DC Taxicab Commission in conjunction with the DC Office of Motion Picture and Television Development is producing a series of videos. The videos will feature drivers talking about their experiences, memorable passengers and the appeal of providing transportation service. The videos will be introduced before the end of the year.
