Happy Holidays from the Team
at Mathieson, Moyski, Austin & Co., LLP!
As the year draws to a close, we want to share some end-of-year tax information with you as well as highlight some of the celebrations we've enjoyed with our clients, colleagues and friends, including our recent Holiday Open House at our expanded office space.

First, some tax tips...
Did You Know...?
PATH Act Tax Extensions Approved by Congress

The Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015 was recently passed by both chambers of Congress, extending tax incentives that support both individuals and job creators. We highlighted some of the extensions that were awaiting approval in our most recent e-newsletter--please  click here  for details. Among the provisions are the enhanced Child Tax Credit, the enhanced American Opportunity Tax Credit, the enhanced Earned Income Tax Credit, the above-the-line deduction for teachers who buy school supplies and the charitable deduction of contributions of real property for conservation purposes along with the Research & Development Tax Credit and Section 179 expensing.

Medical Insurance Premiums Treated as Wages

Health insurance premiums paid on behalf of a greater than 2-percent S corporation shareholder are deductible by the corporation and reportable as wages on the shareholder's Form W-2. If you are a shareholder in an S corporation, own more than 2-percent of the stock, and the company pays your health insurance then you need to act.  The amount that the company paid on your behalf must be added to box 1 of the W-2.  The shareholder then receives an "above-the-line deduction" for the same amount on their personal return.

Fringe Benefits Included as Taxable Wages

Fringe benefits are defined as a form of pay for performance of services given by a company to its employees as a benefit and must be included in an employee's taxable wages unless specifically excluded by law. For example, a common fringe benefit is the value of personal use of a company car. This would be included as gross pay and the corresponding payroll taxes would be withheld from the employee's last paycheck.

Form 1099-MISC Needs to be Filed in January

Individuals and business owners need to file Form 1099-MISC (Miscellaneous Income) for each person paid $600 or more during the year in rents, services performed by someone who is not your employee (including parts and materials), prizes and awards and payments to an attorney. Generally, this form isn't required for payments to a corporation (including a limited liability company that is treated as a C or S Corporation) and payments to a tax-exempt organization.

IRS Increases "De Minimis Safe Harbor" to $2,500

The IRS increased the $500 threshold for final tangible property regulations, increasing the "de minimis safe harbor threshold" to $2,500 beginning with 2016 tax years. The dollar threshold for taxpayers with an applicable audited financial statement remains at $5,000.

Community Connections

This month was a red-letter month for many reasons... including our Holiday Open House which celebrated the retirement of Jim and Gail Mathieson and the expansion of our offices. Clients, colleagues and friends joined us as we celebrated the season together. Best wishes to Jim and Gail as they embark on their new adventures together and thanks to all who attended our Open House.

Our People Make a Difference

What a way to close a year! Brett Mathieson was inducted as president of the board of directors of the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce at the chamber's December luncheon and Matt Lupo was installed as treasurer. These two gentlemen will be serving in 2016, leading the chamber in boosting the vitality of the business community of Wheaton and beyond and maintaining the chamber's fiscal strength. Best wishes to these young men as they step into another year of community service.

As if that wasn't enough to make us proud, Ron Austin was awarded the Wheaton Chamber's Ron Brinkman Award for lifetime achievement! Ron said he was completely surprised by the acknowledgement and wasn't even suspicious when his wife Kim showed up at the luncheon, representing Gary United Methodist Church where she is the new director of communications. Congratulations to Ron with thanks for his contributions to the chamber and the community.

One last holiday cheer for those who attended the Wheaton Lions Club Reindeer Run 5K and to the folks who contributed to the Teen Parent Connection Holiday Gift Drive, co-sponsored by our firm and Wheaton Bank & Trust. We appreciate the many contributions that will make for a happy holiday for young parents and their families.

May your holidays be filled with joy, surrounded by the love of family and friends and full of anticipation for the New Year. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be of service to you this year and we look forward to serving you in many years to come.
