Reincarnation at Gallery in the Woods
in Brattleboro, Vermont August 1 through October 3

Reincarnation is more than a person or animal in whom a particular soul is believed to have been reborn—it's also a new version of something from the past. So in a sense, reincarnation and recycling are from similar foundations and the current exhibition at Gallery in the Woods explores this fundamental concept. Reincarnation is a group show featuring "Vintage Fetish," Gwen Murphy's Bathroom Scales and New Shoe Twins, native figures by David Adix and the robots of "Hillbilly" Bill Healy and Mark Brown. In The Bathroom Scale Series, Murphy explores new frontiers in fetishism as wall sculpture. Creatures, like the one featured above, are assembled from bathroom scales and bathroom paraphernalia. The end result is a statement of the emotions contained in our preoccupation with weight. Some are laughing, some are hopeless and others are menacing and ready to devour. With New Shoe Twins, Murphy inverts our expectations by placing the face and head where the feet should be. Her shoes, no longer able to serve the purpose for which they were designed, take on new life. "A fetish is an object believed to have magical powers to protect or aid its owner," Murphy explains. "I see a shoe as a kind of fetish, because it has a presence, and the power to protect and transport us. Since I was a very young child I have looked at shoes and found them looking back at me, each pair with its particular personality and facial expression—they are like a species of beings made entirely of pairs of identical twins. This series of sculptures is my way of bringing forth the presence I see in each pair of shoes." Also on view in Reincarnation are David Adix's native figures wrapped in balling wire, as well as Bill Healy and Mark Brown's robots in a wonderful array of colors, textures and forms, made from found oil cans, bottle caps, vintage tins, appliance parts and knobs. The work of the featured artists in Reincarnation is on view Saturday, August 1 through Saturday October 3. Come see how they give body and soul to a variety of "has been" materials.

From August 5 - 30, Bromfield Gallery presents "Gilavar" by William Brayton and "New Work: Lines in White Spaces" by David Shapleigh. Brayton's airy sculptures are based on sources including Polynesian stick charts. Shapleigh's wall drawing investigates design principles. The opening reception is Friday, August 7, 6-830 pm.

Summer Salon at ACME Fine Art
in Boston, Massachusetts now through August 15

The key word of the current exhibition at ACME Fine Art is "summer." That's right, the 13th annual Summer Salon is taking place as you read this, and yes, you will miss out if you don't see it. This year's selection features a variety of summer-themed artworks created during the 20th century at New England's renowned summer art colonies, as well as a selection of important works reprised from gallery and museum exhibitions of the 2014-2015 season. To recap: a summer salon features summer-themed art created at summer art colonies. Highlights of the show include a beautiful late cubist oil painting by E. Ambrose Webster, a monumental canvas by contemporary painter Pat Lipsky from her celebrated series of "Color Paintings," a joyous late collage on canvas by master of the medium Fritz Bultman and a delightful mid-century rendering of Truro's "Highland Light" by Herman Maril. Additional highlights showcase an important late "Open Space" series oil paintings by New York School artist Michael Loew and several plein air landscape paintings by master expressionist George McNeil. Other artists whose artwork is a part of the exhibition include Hans Hofmann, Edwin Dickinson, Charles Littler, Kenneth Stubbs, Dorothy Eisner, Haynes Ownby, Panos Ghikas, William Freed, Lillian Orlowsky, Philip Malicoat, Daniel Brustlein, Robert Beauchamp,Tony Vevers and Lester Johnson. Rounding out the featured artwork includes sculpture by Gilbert Franklin and Ilya & Resia Schor, as well as paintings by contemporary artists Rose Basile, Myrna Harrison and George Lloyd. All of this talent and commotion is on view in ACME Fine Art's Summer Salon now through Saturday, August 15. The Wyeths: America Reflected at Heritage Museums & Gardens

The occasion to showcase three generations of American artists doesn't come along very often, and when Heritage Museums & Gardens seized the opportunity, they knew they had to make the show Summer 2015's must-see art exhibition. The Wyeths: America Reflected showcases the art of three generations of the acclaimed family of painters—Andrew Wyeth; his father, N.C.; and his son, Jamie. In particular, this exhibit will focus on quintessential American themes: the meaning of America, the significance of place and family and the role of storytelling in art. The exhibit of over 45 paintings and drawings includes rarely seen works on loan from private collectors. "Heritage Museums & Gardens is honored to bring the evocative artistry of three generations of the Wyeth family to the Cape," said Heritage Museums & Gardens President and CEO Ellen Spear. "Just as one generation of artist is inspired by the next, this exhibit will create opportunities for families to inspire and learn from each other. An important part of the Wyeth family legacy is their representation of America. The works in the show are beautiful visualizations of our country and culture and make for an outstanding and provocative exhibit." N. C. Wyeth's 16 oil paintings from Poems of American Patriotism—depicting Revolutionary heroes, and true American leaders, including George Washington, Paul Revere, and Abraham Lincoln—serve as the artistic introduction to America's foundations. From there, landscapes by Andrew Wyeth speak to the importance of place, both on land and at sea, in the formation of American identity. Lastly, evocative and provocative images by Jamie Wyeth examine seminal figures of our times and the allure of mystery and mortality in American culture. The Wyeths: America Reflected is on view now through Sunday, September 27 at Heritage Museums & Gardens.
