The Lions Club 5K Reindeer Run

December 6th was a banner day for MMA & Co., LLP. Not only did we have our Teen Parent Connection Holiday Gift Drive but some ambitious souls from our team participated in the Lions Club 5K Reindeer Run!

Mathieson, Moyski, Austin & Co., LLP, once again sponsored the photo display and were proud to see so many of our team at the starting gate--and the finish line. Proceeds benefit Wheaton Lions Club Charities.

The weather cooperated and we donned our reindeer antlers for a good cause...

Family, friends and work colleagues joined together to make it a fun day and raise some money for our community.

See you at the Lions Club Reindeer Run 2015!

New Year Brings in New Partners

The New Year has brought some exciting changes to Mathieson, Moyski, Austin & Co., including staff announcements.

Brett Mathieson, CPA, has been promoted to partner at the firm. "We're delighted to announce Brett's admission as partner," said Mike Moyski, CPA. "Brett has made a substantial contribution to the growth of the firm and will play an important role in creating our future."

An employee of the firm for the past ten years, Brett has significant experience in individual and corporate taxation, auditing closely held businesses and local governmental units, as well as providing implementation and training for various accounting systems.

He's also president-elect of the board of directors of the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce and president of the board of directors of the City of Wheaton Police Pension Fund.

In December, Brian Eisenmenger, CPA, merged his accounting practice with MMA & Co., bringing significant experience and new clients to the firm.

"I've known the partners of Mathieson, Moyski, Austin & Co. for many years and feel confident that our commitment to our clients and our values align," said Brian about the merger. He added that the merger provides wider coverage for his clients and expands the scope of services available to them. He and Amanda Tomaszewski relocated to the offices of MMA & Co. at the first of the year.

"We welcome Brian to the firm and look forward to working with him," said Mike Moyski.

How the Affordable Care Act May Affect You and Your Taxes

In 2013 we saw the first phase of the impact of the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare") on individual tax returns.  There was the introduction of:

  • an additional Medicare Tax (0.9% Tax on wages over $250,000 married/$200,000 single)
  • Net Investment Income Tax (3.8% Tax on investment income for taxpayers whose incomes exceed $250,000/$200,000)

The 2014 tax year was the introduction of the individual mandate, requiring that Americans obtain health insurance or pay a tax penalty which is calculated and paid for with an individual's annual tax return.  The penalty starts at $95 per adult ($47.50 per child) all the way up to 1.0% of family income, whichever is greater.

Here are some questions you will need to answer in order for us to help with your 2014 individual tax return:

  • Were all members of your family covered by a health insurance plan for all 12 months of the year? If there was any month you were not covered, then you might be subject to a tax penalty. (There are multiple exceptions to avoid this penalty--we can discuss those options with you.)
  • Did any member of your family purchase health insurance coverage from the Health Insurance Marketplace?  (www.healthcare.gov) If so, then you will be sent form 1095-A. Please make sure to include this form with the rest of your tax information.

When you provide us with your tax information, please make sure you've addressed these questions. We are working diligently to make sure that the impact of the individual mandate is clear and in compliance with the requirements of this new mandate. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact our office.
