Industry-wide Economic Impact Study to be Unveiled Today
The General Aviation Manufacturers Association will play host to its annual "State of the Industry" press conference today at the Newseum in Washington, D.C., beginning at 12:30 p.m. EST. During the event, eight general aviation trade associations, including the Aircraft Electronics Association, will unveil the results of a new industry-wide PricewaterhouseCoopers study on general aviation's total impact on the U.S. and state economies.  AEA President says Overcoming Installation Challenges is Key to Meeting ADS-B Deadline
According to a column written by AEA President Paula Derks in this month's Avionics News, the AEA played host to a two-day forum in January on Part 23 and Part 25 ADS-B installation challenges. The forum attracted nearly 60 industry and FAA professionals in three specific realms of the industry: manufacturers, repair stations and regulators. Some significant outcomes from these forums included the need for more education to both industry and the aircraft owners on compliance. The FAA has established an ADS-B Focus Team to foster consistent interpretation and applications of ADS-B related regulations, policy and guidance. Repair station representatives working in the Part 25 arena called on airframe manufacturers to issue service bulletins to assist in installations, and voiced their concern about product availability for certain Part 25 class of airplanes.  AEA Regulatory Leadership Panel, April 10
The AEA Convention plays host to a special regulatory leadership panel on Friday, April 10, in Dallas. 2015 will be the year of change. Congress is working on the FAA's reauthorization that will affect the agency's ability to implement NextGen, support certification and installation of avionics systems, and attend industry-sponsored trainings and conferences. There are major changes within Part 23 aircraft design, certification and maintenance. The Rotorcraft Directorate and the Fort Worth certification office had a major reorganization at the end of last year, which changes the dynamics of certification in the FAA's Southwest region. In addition, 2015 will be the year of ADS-B as we expand the focus on effective installations in transport category aircraft. Finally, the international growth in UAS can't be ignored as we consider our business models into the next decade.  Avionics News Technical Training Exam Available Online
The 14th annual Avionics News Technical Training Exam is available exclusively online for AEA members. By completing the exam, which covers regulatory and technical topics featured in the 2014 issues of Avionics News, technicians can get a head start on their FAA-accepted training.
Individuals who complete the exam and score 85 percent or higher receive credit toward IA renewal, FAA AMT awards and the AEA Avionics Training Excellence Award. Applications for the ATE Award are available online, and the deadline for submitting applications for the ATE Award is April 1.
For a company to be eligible for the ATE Award, all of its technicians must have completed at least one AEA training event in 2014, which includes:
- AEA Regional Meetings or the AEA International Convention & Trade Show.
- Avionics News Technical Training Exam.
- AEA computer-based training.
- OEM and AEA partner training. Get recognized for your commitment to training by displaying the ATE Award plaque, window decal, hangar banner and hangar signs at your business.

CUTTER AVIATION named BRYANT ELLIOTT to the new role of regional sales manager for Cutter's Texas Piper South, based in San Antonio, Texas. In addition, the FAA honored Cutter's service facilities in Phoenix, Addison and San Antonion with the Diamond Award of Excellence.
PACIFIC COAST AVIONICS recently completed another touchscreen GPS/nav/comm and digital weather radar upgrade on a Cessna Citation II business jet, which is owned and operated by an extruded plastics products manufacturer with multiple locations in the U.S.
VIH AEROSPACE was awarded Transport Canada STC SH14-43 for a replacement Master Caution Panel (Model MCP01) for the Bell 212 series helicopter. FAA and EASA approvals are pending.
SPIRIT AERONAUTICS promoted MICHAEL BAILEY to regional sales manager for the North American base region, which includes Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, Delaware and Maryland. In addition, RUSSELL COLDIRON joined the company as purchasing/material control manager, and CHARLES "MIKE" EVANS was promoted to lead technician in the maintenance production department.
L-3 AVIATION PRODUCTS and ACSS announced that Boeing certified its NXT-800 Mode S transponder for Boeing 767 airplanes.
GULFSTREAM AEROSPACE CORP. appointed NICOLAS ROBINSON director of product support sales for Asia Pacific. In addition, the company's Flight Operations Test organization earned International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations Stage 2 certification.
TRIG AVIONICS announced new installation benefits for its TT31 transponder. By using software version 3.11 or higher, installers can now use the original installed tray, which reduces the time and cost of a compliant ADS-B install. In addition, Trig opened a new custom-built facility at Heriot Watt Research Park to accommodate a growing team.
JEPPESEN introduced a new version of its flight information solution for private pilots who fly under visual flight rules -- Mobile FliteDeck VFR.
BECKER AVIONICS' DVCS6100 Digital Audio System was selected by Ecolift Corp. of San Juan, Puerto Rico, for integration into the Puerto Rico Police Department's three B429 helicopters.
LANDMARK AVIATION acquired the fixed base operation assets of Island City Flying Service Inc. at Key West International Airport. In addition, WILLIAM MCLEMORE was named vice president and chief information officer.
PS ENGINEERING said the PDA360EX is a new product that fills a void in the higher-end audio panel market designed exclusively for experimental aircraft.
GOGO BUSINESS AVIATION announced it will bring its next generation ATG-4 air-to-ground connectivity technology to business aviation. ATG-4 will be available for business aircraft via a new equipment package called ATG 8000. First shipments are expected in April 2015.
DUNCAN AVIATION will play host to the second of eight free ADS-B and FANS 1/A+ seminars on Feb. 19 in Salt Lake City, Utah. INTERTRADE, a Rockwell Collins company, opened a new distribution center at the Singapore Changi Airport to store and ship inventory. ROCKWELL COLLINS will expand its aircraft observation weather research program with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to improve the accuracy of forecasts for the aviation industry and the general public. CROWNAIR AVIATION was selected by Eclipse Aerospace as the authorized Eclipse sales representative for the Western United States. DAC INTERNATIONAL, a Greenwich AeroGroup company, received AS9120A and ISO 9001:2008 certification. CONSTANT AVIATION Rotable Exchange, a parts sourcing and distribution company, increased its available parts inventory an additional $5 million, bring total inventory to more than $45 million with more than 50,000 line items. GARMIN announced expanded pilot training opportunities for 2015 to include additional live classes and eLearning courses. BANYAN AIR SERVICE corporate chaplain, ALBERT BELTRAN, was named 2014 Chaplain of the Year for fulfilling Corporate Chaplains of America's mission statement.
