 ADS-B Out Installation Challenges Addressed at FAA and Industry Forum
The Aircraft Electronics Association played host to nearly 50 industry professionals during a two-day forum, Jan. 12-13, to address the challenges of ADS-B Out installations in the Part 23 and 25 arena. Companies that manufacture ADS-B Out products were in attendance along with representatives from avionics repair shops and officials from the Federal Aviation Administration. Attendees discussed ADS-B Out challenges faced by installers, including the availability of products; availability of supplemental type certificates; integration challenges; utility of field approvals; and customer motivation. Representatives from the FAA's Avionics Maintenance Branch, the Small Airplane Directorate and the Transport Directorate were in attendance.  Rep. Bill Shuster Names Subcommittee Chairmen for 114th U.S. Congress
Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-PA) announced his selections for the Committee's six subcommittee chairmen and the full committee vice chairman for the 114th Congress. The vice chairman and subcommittee chairmen are expected to be confirmed at the committee's organizational meeting in late January. Complete subcommittee rosters also will be announced at a later date. Chairman Shuster's selections for the committee's leadership team are: Subcommittee on Aviation, Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-NJ); Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA); Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings and Emergency Management, Rep.  Avionics Repair Stations: Getting the ADS-B System Installation Right
Recently, there has been a fair amount of discussion on the upcoming 2020 ADS-B Out mandate in the press. More and more, ADS-B Out installations are being requested by avionics repair shop customers. As we approach the Federal Aviation Administration's Jan. 1, 2020, deadline in the U.S., it will become a larger portion of the industry's installation business. Aircraft owners are looking to their local avionics repair shops for guidance on what solutions to install, and how to do it in a rule-compliant fashion. Unfortunately, not all shops are up to speed on the technology and the real choices. AEA Joins Industry Trade Associations in Petition to FAA
On. Jan. 9, the AEA joined a coalition of aviation trade associations to petition the FAA to restore the right to voluntarily surrender a repair station certificate. In its new repair station rule, which became effective in November 2014, the FAA took the unprecedented step of subjecting surrendered certificates to "acceptance for cancellation." The coalition called for the removal of this requirement, which is unique among aviation certificates, runs counter to the interest of aviation safety and increases regulatory administrative burden without any agency explanation as to how the new discretion will be utilized. CAR 521 revision update
The Transport Canada Civil Aviation Standards division has been working with several internal committees to advance the revision to CAR 521. Senate and Cabinet committees have been reviewing the plan for the change and have asked for clarifications in several areas. This has resulted in further delays to the introduction of a notice of proposed amendment and industry consultations. The planned areas of revision have not changed since the PICA was published a year ago. The most significant change should be to cover specific language to allow a delegate to issue an alternate design approval for modifications instead of an STC. More...

AEA Announces Dates and Locations for 2015 Regional Meetings
The Aircraft Electronics Association recently unveiled the dates and locations for its 2015 Regional Meetings. The schedule is as follows:
- May 4-6 Europe (Barcelona, Spain)
- Aug. 18-19 Latin America (Bogota, Colombia)
- Sept. 10-11 U.S. Central (Kansas City, Missouri)
- Sept. 21-22 U.S. West (Reno, Nevada)
- Oct. 1-2 Canada (Toronto, Ontario)
- Oct. 12-13 U.S. East (Tampa, Florida)
- Nov. 2-3 South Pacific (Queenstown, New Zealand)
 The AEA annually hosts regional meetings in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Latin America and the South Pacific. The AEA Regional Meetings offer a forum to see, hear and learn about all the new technology on the market, network with industry peers and discover best practices for the aviation repair station industry. Attendees and exhibitors gather for two to three days of regulatory and technical seminars, business management sessions and exhibits. Advance registration will be accepted online beginning Feb. 1.  QF Avionics Center sees Shift in Customers
At Red Deer Regional Airport, halfway between Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta, Canada, QF Avionics Center owner and founder Bob Marryat eyes the schedule. An avionics retrofit for a Lockheed L-188 Electra, a Garmin 400W IFR GPS system and Sandel TAWS installation on a Jetstream 32, and a new Bird Dog aerial fire suppression package installation on an Aero Commander 690 -- it's a big shift from the small-scale general aviation aircraft Marryat focused on just a decade ago.  Avionics News Technical Training Exam Available Online
The 14th annual Avionics News Technical Training Exam is available exclusively online for AEA members. By completing the exam, which covers regulatory and technical topics featured in the 2014 issues of Avionics News, technicians can get a head start on their FAA-accepted training.
Individuals who complete the exam and score 85 percent or higher receive credit toward IA renewal, FAA AMT awards and the AEA Avionics Training Excellence Award. Applications for the ATE Award are available online, and the deadline for submitting applications for the ATE Award is April 1.
For a company to be eligible for the ATE Award, all of its technicians must have completed at least one AEA training event in 2014, which includes:
- AEA Regional Meetings or the AEA International Convention & Trade Show.
- Avionics News Technical Training Exam.
- AEA computer-based training.
- OEM and AEA partner training. Get recognized for your commitment to training by displaying the ATE Award plaque, window decal, hangar banner and hangar signs at your business.

FREEFLIGHT SYSTEMS announced that Hawker Beechcraft Services-Tampa has successfully integrated an ADS-B compliant suite of FreeFlight avionics components that includes dual FDL-1090-TX extended squitter transponders; a 1201 WAAS/GPS receiver unit and an FDL-978-RX universal access transmitter that enables operators to display weather and traffic conditions to portable iPad devices for the King Air 200 aircraft.
ADAMS AVIATION is now a stocking distributor for Beringer Aero, supporting the full range of its high-performance Wheel and Brake Systems.
DUNCAN AVIATION will play host to a series of free, day-long NextGen Seminars throughout 2015, moderated by MARK FRANCETIC, regional avionics sales manager. GLOBAL AVIATION TECHNOLOGIES added Global Aviation Maintenance, a wholly owned subsidiary of GAT, which provides maintenance support for the aviation community.
EAGLE CREEK AVIATION SERVICES, a Twin Commander Aircraft factory-authorized service center, delivered four Garmin G950 Commanders, and two more are in the works at Eagle Creek's Indianapolis facility.
GARMIN said it is continuing to make a series of investments into developing a robust lineup of helicopter solutions, which are tailored to the unique missions carried out by these operators. Garmin's latest additions include Night Vision Goggle capable versions of the GTR 225 COM and GNC 255 NAV/COM radios, as well as the introduction of the GWX 70H solid-state weather radar, which are optimized for helicopter operations. In addition, Gulfstream selected Garmin's GTX 3000 Mode S extended squitter remote transponder and GDL 88 ADS-B datalink for the G150 business jet.
STANDARDAERO appointed CLINTON KENT vice president, sales and customer service for its Components business unit.
D.L.S. ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS plays host to an EMC practical applications seminar and workshop, April 14-16, in Northbrook, Illinois.

Industry advocates on Capitol Hill
In 2009, General Aviation Caucuses were formed in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate to inform congressional members and staff about the importance of general aviation to the nation's economy and transportation system. Today, the House GA Caucus has grown to become one of the largest caucuses in the House of Representatives. A listing of current House and Senate GA Caucus members is available on the AEA website.
The congressional caucuses recently lost a few members due to retirement or election defeat in November, and new caucuses are being formed during the new session that began in January. More...
