'PINKY' DURHAM TO BE HONORED
ABAC TO 'CARRY LOAD'
Next Thursday, April 23, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will again host a "Carry The Load Step-Off Rally" -- a two-mile relay through the campus that culminates with a ceremony and a send-off of ABAC's  participants in this year's national "Carry the Load" relay.
"Carry The Load" is a nationwide effort designed to restore the true meaning to Memorial Day by connecting Americans
to the sacrifices of the military, law enforcement, firefighters and rescue personnel.
ABAC's rally is from
noon until 6 p.m. Thursday
. Both two-mile and quarter-mile walking routes throughout the afternoon will begin and end at
Lewis Hall
on the front campus. At 6 p.m., a ceremony on Lewis Hall's front steps includes
tribute videos, r
ecognition of special guests and the
send-off of ABAC's national relay team.

, have been invited; Bridges hinted that there
will also
be a special announcement.
Durham was awarded the nation's highest decoration posthumously for his heroism in battle in Vietnam during October 1967. Although mortally wounded, Durham continued fighting and helped save the lives of some of his fellow soldiers.
Anyone may join the rally walk at ABAC on Thursday, and may also join the national relay at any point along its route. Participants do not have to carry a weight or a pack but are encouraged to carry something, even if it is a photograph. The point is to make an emotional connection with the person whom one is "carrying."

MARATHON MAN
TIFTON'S BEEMAN READY FOR
HIS 38th BOSTON MARATHON
Mike Beeman, Tift County High School teacher and assistant track and field coach, is in Boston for his 38th consecutive Boston Marathon.
The 119th running of the Boston Marathon is on Monday.
"I started in 1978 as a senior at Merrimack College," he says.
The race is 26.2 miles, and Beeman has likened it to running from Tifton to Ashburn and back.
He has said the first half of the race is all downhill and the second half consists of hills, known as "Heart Break Hill," with nothing but hills between miles 16 and 20.
"That's why they call it the 'Heart Break Hill,' " Beeman has said. "It'll break your heart."
He is one of only about a dozen active runners with his consecutive record in the Boston Marathon.
Before he left Tifton, Beeman told WALB-TV: "When you get to the finish of the Boston Marathon you say, 'Yeah, that was worth it, that was OK. When you tell children, as a role model, you say,'You've got to work hard to achieve something,' you can back it up."

SENIOR CENTER IN TEMPORARY HOME
Tifton's Leroy Rogers Senior Center has a new temporary home, says Director Fran Kinchen.
The senior center is now located downtown at 508 S Main St., next to the Tifton Welcome Station, in the former Troy University building.
Parking is beside the building.
The senior center was forced to temporarily relocate from its building on Second Street because of construction as the center is being expanded. The construction is expected to take several months.

IT'S TIME TO 'E-CYCLE'
Keep Tift Beautiful's
annual e-cycle event is Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m.-noon in the Cato Knight Parking Lot in Downtown Tifton.
This is an
opportunity
to recycle old electronic items. All electronics will be accepted except television sets and large-screen computer monitors; however, flat screen monitors are acceptable.
This year's
event is part of Georgia Cities Week.

RAIN POSTPONES SOCCER FOR LITERACY
The Soccer for Literacy event scheduled for this Sunday at the Tiftarea YMCA has been postponed until further notice because of inclement weather.
"We will announce the rescheduled date as soon as that is determined," said Soccer Event Chair Dr.
John Hamm, board member for
Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift County.
The annual tournament had been moved to April to  avoid the heat of July.
"With the two weeks of rain the Tiftarea has been having the fields are just too wet for tournament play, and the forecast is for more rain on Sunday," Hamm said.
Planned and coordinated by
Literacy Volunteers, the
Hispanic Soccer League and the
Tiftarea YMCA, the tournament is a key
fundraiser for the
English language instruction programs of Literacy Volunteers. It will feature adult competition among men and women and children ages 6-8 and 8-10. Family fun events include a bouncy house and Mexican food.
Sponsors are
Bell Plantation, Lewis Taylor Farms, Alan Parrish Farms, Quality Employment Service, Inc., Southeastern Federal Credit Union and
Tift Regional Medical Center.
