HONORING TIFTON'S TOP TEACHERS
The Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence and the Tifton Rotary Club on Thursday night, Feb. 26, recognized this year's recipients of the Excellence in Teaching Awards.
Ten local teachers were honored at a banquet. They were nominated by students, parents and peers.This was the 24th consecutive year the education foundation has recognized top teachers in the Tift County public schools. For 22 years, the Tifton Rotary Club has sponsored the banquet in place of the club's Valentine's Day dinner social.
This year's recipients are: Amelia Stripling, Tift County pre-K teacher; Kelly Merritt, first grade teacher at Annie Belle Clark Primary; Jana Cromer, literacy coach at G.O. Bailey Primary; Kim Jacobs, kindergarten teacher at G.O. Bailey; Meghan Law, second grade teacher at G.O. Bailey; Lisa Janelle, kindergarten teacher at Northside Primary; Beth Thompson, pre-K teacher at Omega School; Robbin Tyson, fifth grade teacher at Matt Wilson Elementary; Heather Smith, science teacher at Tift County High School; and Sharon Smiley, special education teacher at Sixth Street Academy.
Student members of Tift County High's Eighth Street Singing Company provided entertainment, and the Tifton Council of Garden Clubs did the flowers and decorations.

TRAVIS TRITT TO PERFORM IN TIFTON
Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum country artist Travis Tritt is coming to Tifton for a concert on Saturday,
March
28, at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the show, with opening act Strung Like a Horse.
The concert is sponsored by Tifton Harley-Davidson.
Other hits include "It's a Great Day to be Alive", Here's a Quarter (Call Someone Who Cares)", "Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde," and "Lord, Have Mercy on the Working Man."

FIRST TUESDAY BRINGS CLASSICAL STRINGS
The First Tuesday Concert Series features "A Night of a Classical String Duet" on March 3 at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. This concert is free and open to the public.
The First Tuesday series, now in its 14th year, features regional professional artists on the first Tuesdays of five months during the year. Dr. Susan Roe, director of music for the School of Liberal Arts, is the First Tuesday program director.
"A Night of a Classical String Duet" spotlights "Nephina," a duo comprised of violinist Nina Lutz and guitarist Nephtali Santiago. The duo's programming features the music of Bach, Nin Culmell, Albeniz Lauro and Astor Piazzolla, as well as arrangements for guitar and violin works from the "Great American Song Book."
Lutz is the string area chair at Valdosta State University and has been concertmaster of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra and first violinist of the VSU Faculty String Quartet since 1992. She also teaches applied violin, music theory and functional piano at VSU.
Santiago's first teachers included Harold Cobo and Bill Viola. He received a bachelor's degree in guitar performance at Temple University, where he studied with Peter Segal and was active as a teacher and performer. He was also the first Temple guitarist to win the Concerto Soloists Competition. He teaches guitar at VSU.

22nd ANNUAL BIDS FOR KIDS
TV AUCTION IS SATURDAY
The Exchange Club of Tifton is hosting the 22nd annual Bids for Kids Televised Auction on Saturday, Feb. 28 from 5-10 p.m.
The special event will benefit area agencies involved in helping to prevent and treat child abuse in Tifton and Tift County.
The live televised auction will feature more than 200 items that will be offered to the highest bidder.
All funds raised from the auction stay in Tift County. Items will include jewelry, gift certificates, home de?cor, weekend getaways and more.
