HONORING EX-CHIEF JIM SMITH
GED SCHOLARSHIP NAMED FOR TIFTON'S FORMER POLICE CHIEF

The Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift County has created the Chief James Smith GED Scholarship Fund to honor the long-time literacy board member and retired Tifton police chief.

Smith retired from the Tifton Police Department in 2011 after serving Tifton for 24 years. He was one of the
Chief Jim Smith
original founders of the Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift
County in the early 1990s, through the Tift County Commission on Children and Youth. Originally, the organization taught people to read, not GED (General Equivalency Diploma) preparation.

"The Police Department provided most of the tutors," Smith said in an interview in 2013. "The Police Department bought the reading books by holding a yearly gospel sing and a block party with Tifton Housing Authority.

Smith has served as Literacy Volunteers president twice and has been an active and engaged board member throughout his law enforcement

career.

"Of all the many community projects I have been involved with over the past 25 years, Literacy Volunteers has been the most enjoyable and rewarding," Smith said. "It feels good when a person learns to read or get their GED. For most of these people, society has cast them aside. Volunteer tutors don't just teach academic skills; they teach the students to believe in themselves. A person who believes in himself learns to set goals and to make his life much better."

Qualifying students who receive the GED Scholarships will receive one-on-one tutoring to ensure they will succeed, said LVTCC Interim Director Bonnie Sayles.

Sayles followed the Tift County Rotary Club's lead and donated $200 she received from donors to the Tiftarea YMCA's Polar Bear Plunge Jan. 1 to the Chief Smith GED Scholarship Fund. Sayles was one of eight local people raising funds for the YMCA and other local charities in the event.

Sayles, Horst and all members of the literacy board encourage the community to get behind the Scholarship Fund as a tribute to Chief Jim Smith and his legacy.

"If you believe that improving literacy in Tift County is key to our economic success, you should support this fund in the strongest way possible," Sayles said. "Each school dropout that earns a GED diploma, each parent that improves his or her knowledge of health and his or her ability to parent successfully, each person that learns to read better or speak English better helps to improve our society as a whole. We owe it to ourselves to make sure we can continue the programs that make this possible."

MORE PEANUT ACREAGE EXPECTED

BIG CROWD ATENDS GA PEANUT FARM SHOW AT UGA TIFTON CAMPUS CONFERENCE CENTER

By Clint Thompson

University of Georgia's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences

Planting season is still three to four months away, but this year's peanut crop is already on the minds of Georgia farmers. There are many questions left to answer.

Peanut farmers shared concerns about acreage planted, industry impact of the expected increased acreage and the effect on crop rotation during the Georgia Peanut Farm Show, held Thursday, Jan. 15, at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center.

"We need to make sure we try to help them save what little money they can," said Scott Monfort, UGA Extension peanut agronomist. "The main point here at the farm show is to share information that will maximize productivity while minimizing inputs as much as possible."

Monfort and fellow UGA peanut team members addressed concerns and supplied answers during UGA's production seminar, an important element of the farm show. Monfort discussed the key factors farmers should consider in preparing for the 2015 growing season.

Part of that planning includes farmers readying themselves for a drastic increase in state acreage.

"In most years, the information that's coming out of research and Extension is important. However, with a year like this year, when we know we're going to increase acres again and we know it's going to put a pinch on crop rotations to some degree and we know prices are going to be somewhat suppressed for all commodities, it's even more important that we try to share as much information as possible and get that in front of the growers," he said.

Monfort estimates 650,000 to 700,000 acres of peanuts next year, up from the 590,000 acres planted last year and 430,000 acres the year before. More acreage could result in increased a strain on peanuts' market price, which currently sits in the $400 to $425 per ton range.
