GIVING THANKS FOR ALL WE HAVE

We have much for which to be thankful here in South Georgia. As you gather around your Thanksgiving  table, please remember those among us who are undergoing hardships and need our help and our prayers.

There is no reason for anyone to be alone or without a Thanksgiving meal. An anonymous donor is quietly footing the bill for a free community lunch in Tifton on Thanksgiving Day at the Tiftarea Conference Center, 804 W. 7th St., behind Applebee's.

BJ Smith, her crew and many volunteers will be serving a holiday meal from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. If you are alone, are a senior, are down on your luck, or just need to be with others, you are invited.

For information, contact Judy Shiflet at 229-353-6322 or [email protected]

And for those of you planning to travel during the Thanksgiving weekend, a new National Weather Service website (click here) lets you map out your route and get an idea of what kind of weather to expect.

Navigate to the "Enhanced Data Display" and click the green plus sign next to "hazards." That will show you all of the current watches and warnings. Next click on the "travel hazard forecast" button in the top right corner of the page. From there, you can enter your starting and ending locations and what day and time you're planning to start driving.

The tool also offers information about projected visibility, wind speeds and details about active warnings, watches or advisories. As you move along the route, you can also right click and get an up-to-date forecast.

Happy Thanksgiving!

TRAVIS PRATT & 'TIFTON'S CHRISTMAS CAROL' COMING TO THE TIFT

Travis Pratt, whose show-stopping performance on NBC-TV's "America's Got Talent" wowed the judges last year, is returning to his hometown of Tifton for a Christmas Concert at the Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20.

Pratt is headlining a star-studded line-up of performers for his show, "Travis Pratt Presents Tifton's Christmas Carol," to benefit Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift County, which provides tutoring and
TPratt
PRATT
scholarships, assisting Tift County students wanting to improve their educational and employment opportunities by obtaining General Education Diplomas.

Travis Pratt is an opera singer living in Houston, Texas, who grew up singing gospel music in Tifton. In June 2013, he made big splash in his "America's Got Talent" audition when he sang a soprano aria in its actual high range. The 90-second appearance of the unassuming Albany State University alumnus left judges Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Mel B "stunned." They all voted Yes," sending him to the Vegas Round.

Pratt is putting together the singers for the event in Tifton, and more information will be announced. Singers already committed include Dr. Susan Roe, Kyle Dean and Eric Gonzales, as well as local pianist Greg Millette.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door and are available through board members and by calling Literacy Volunteers at 229-391-2527 or emailing [email protected]. Sponsors may attend a VIP after party with Pratt and the other performers. Sponsorship opportunities are available at levels from $100 to $250, $500 and $1,000.

'TIS THE SEASON ... FOR THE VICTORIAN VILLAGE

BY CANDLELIGHT

Experience the Christmas season in the 1880s with Victorian Village by Candlelight from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

The evening is limited to 125 visitors with 25 people in each of five groups for the Victorian Village tours. Groups will meet at the Country Store to leave on the museum train every 30 minutes beginning at 5:30 p.m., with the last group leaving the train station at 7:30 p.m.

Guests will learn about two of the Victorian traditions that have become a part of the legend of Santa Claus during this lantern-lit event. Visitors will get a taste of the community's celebratory spirit as they stop in for a Christmas Eve visit in a Victorian-era village in South Georgia back when electricity was a luxury, humble gifts were made by hand, and Christmas Eve was spent cooking delicious treats on the open hearth of the fireplace.

For information, contact the Country Store at 229-391-5205.
