Embody teams up with UCSD Center for Integrative Medicine for first "YOGA IN MEDICINE" conference After over two years of planning and coordinating with the Center for Integrative Medicine (CIM at UCSD, I was thrilled to fly back to San Diego to co- lead an exciting pilot conference with Dr. Melanie Fiorella focusing on bringing Yoga into the current Medical system. I landed in San Diego after a long flight from Tel Aviv on Thursday morning, Jan. 29 and found myself standing in a large auditorium at the UCSD Campus in La Jolla for the opening lecture on Friday evening, Jan. 30, to over 130 attendees. Friday evening's lecture was on "Yoga and Research" by Amy Wheeler, PhD, a professor at California State University in San Bernadino, where she is involved in developing numerous Yoga Therapy research projects, including work with researchers at Vanderbilt University pertaining to Metabolic Syndrome, Kidney Dialysis, Colon and Rectal Cancer, Ovarian and Uterine Cancer, and recovery after low back surgery. The program continued for two full days on Saturday and Sunday to a sold out crowd of 55 Medical Doctors and health professionals from across the US and abroad. In that time, I taught three Yoga classes focusing on different topics including "Yoga for Stress Relief", "Yoga for Lower Back Pain" and "Yoga for the Upper Back Neck and Shoulders." Dr. Melanie Fiorella, who is on the board of the CIM and Medical Director of the Family Medicine Clinic at 4th and Lewis, presented on "Chronic Pain and Yoga" and "Ayurveda, Nutrition & Lifestyle." The program included both lectures and practices on various additional topics including Yoga Philosophy, Pranayama and Meditation, Integrating Yoga into Medicine and Making Appropriate Referrals. For many participants, it was their first real exposure to Yoga as a therapeutic modality. The entire team at Embody Physical Therapy and Yoga attended including therapists Nicole Mullins, Alison McLean and Jennifer Chang as well as our office coordinators and Yogis Amanda Cravinho and Caitlin Steigler. The weekend was a huge success and we are planning a second conference on Aug. 1-2, 2015. I was especially surprised by the enthusiasm and willingness of many doctors to begin incorporating Yoga in their medical practices. It felt like a huge step forward in establishing Yoga Therapy as a recognized profession in the West.
Yes, it's happening!!
