Tifton's La'Chelsea King had placed second during the Tifton competition and also had been invited to try out in Atlanta.

Thursday night's "Idol" program was filmed during the recent Atlanta auditions. Holloway was one of 44 singer/musicians in Atlanta chosen to continue the journey toward becoming the next American Idol.

COUNCIL AGREES ON SIGN REGS;
MAYOR HAS NO CONFLICT,
CITY ATTORNEY SAYS

After months of discussion and sometimes spirited debate, Tifton City Council has reached a consensus on amendments regulating outdoor signage in the city. Council met in special session on Wednesday, Jan. 22, to discuss the sign proposals, agreeing to prohibit flashing, blinking and strobing electronic signs, but allowing scrolling signs.

Council also agreed to guidelines governing banners, political-type stick signs and A-frame sandwich board-type signage.

The city's Historic Preservation Commission guidelines will be amended to allow illuminated and electronic display signs within the Historic District's commercial zone on a case-by-case basis upon approval by the city's Historic Preservation Commission. The HPC will be charged with considering several criteria for the signs, such as neighborhood characteristics and other signage nearby.

The proposals are being sent for review to the state Department of Natural Resources' Historic Preservation Division. The proposals also must go before the Planning and Zoning Board before City Council takes a final vote, expected in either late February or early March.

Before Wesnesday's discussion, City Attorney Rob Wilmot ruled that Mayor Jamie Cater does not have a conflict of interest in discussing and voting upon the sign amendments to the HPC manual and to the city's Land Development Code.

Last week, resident Eloise Styer raised the conflict question based upon the mayor's ownership of commercial buildings for lease in the downtown commercial district and his comments about the difficulty in renting buildings because of restrictive Historic District guidelines.

Wilmot says he researched state statutes, local ordinances and case law, determining that changes in signage guidelines affect the public as a whole and do not specifically affect the mayor's interest. Therefore, Wilmot says "Mayor Cater may decide and vote" on city amendments governing signage.

A "Women's Faces" exhibit opens with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 30 at The Gallery at the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

The opening reception, hosted by Tifton's Twentieth Century Library Club, will showcase the exhibit of women's faces portrayed in clay and on canvas.

Potters Janice Hall and Pat Shields specialize in jugs of women's faces. Each of the featured face jugs is made from native clay processed by a mule-driven mill, wheel thrown and individually decorated by hand.

As part of Women's Faces, the Tifton Twentieth Century Library Club will present "Faces Make Places," a GFWC Arts Partnership Project in which the club has produced several large photo collages and scrapbooks celebrating women from all social and economic backgrounds and their contributions to the Tifton community.

"Art students from Tift County High School and Eighth Street Middle School will also provide various pieces of art for the project. The collages will include women from the early 1900s through the present day," says Polly Huff, assistant director and curator at the museum.

INDIE-ALT FOLK GROUP PERFORMING
AT 'EVENING FOR ABAC' FUNDRAISER

Combine a delicious meal with fantastic entertainment for a wonderful cause, and you have the annual Evening for ABAC at 6 p.m. March 7 in Gressette Gymnasium at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

"Everything points toward an evening that our many alumni and friends will never forget. I believe this event will build on the legacy of the many great 'Dollars for Scholars' programs we have had in

von Grey

the past," says Arts Connection Director Wayne Jones.

Indie-alternative folk group von Grey, four classically trained sisters, will perform. Billboard magazine praised their "crystalline harmonies, stirring lyrics and inventive melodies." They have appeared on "Late Show with David Letterman," "Conan," NBC's "Rock Center with Brian Williams," and CNN's "Road Warriors."

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says, "See them now, because a few years down the road, you might have to pay big bucks for nosebleed seats in an arena to catch these talented musicians."

ABAC Foundation Chief Operating Officer Jodie Snow said the Foundation depends on Evening for ABAC support to fund student scholarships, including the highly competitive Foundation Scholars program.

Evening for ABAC tickets are $100 for singles and $180 for couples. A reserved table for eight is available for $1,250.  A portion of the cost for each ticket is tax deductible. Tickets are available by calling 229-391- 4895.
