ARTICLE HEADING
"The musical experience in Powell River was an important step in my musical development. The faculty challenged me to make music from my heart in every note that I played. From the very beginning, all the teachers were supportive and devoted to helping us grow as musicians and as people."

Representing Powell River
ELI SCHWEITZER
Powell River will be proudly represented by young cellist Eli Schweitzer in PRISMA next week. Having watched performances for eight seasons and participated in one season of the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific (SOAP), Schweitzer is ready to take the stage yet again.
While this may be his second year of the performance academy, Schweitzer has a much longer history in music. At the age of seven, he enrolled in his first cello lesson. As a child, he had explored instruments on a computer game and chose the cello as his favourite. "The violin was too squeaky, the bass was too grumbly and the cello was perfect," he said.
Since then, Schweitzer has stuck to the cello and his past experiences with SOAP have helped him immensely. "I found more confidence in myself, in my orchestral abilities," he said. "My confidence as a cellist was extremely advanced."
This year, Schweitzer hopes to improve as a soloist. "What makes this year a little bit different is that they're putting more emphasis on the audition aspect of the orchestra," he said. "That not only helps you as an orchestral musician, but as a soloist and that's where I need help."
Schweitzer is excited to return to the Evergreen Theatre's stage for another year of the music academy. "The experience is overwhelming, because you're in there with so many other musicians and you get that massive sound. It's so cool."
