Travis Pratt Revisits 'America's Got Talent;'

This has been a big week for Tifton's talented singers. Travis Pratt of Tifton made his return to NBC's "America's Got Talent." Pratt had received renown on the show when he wowed the judges and audience with his opera skills and then proposed marriage to his girlfriend on national TV.
Pratt moved on to the show's next level in Las Vegas but unfortunately did not advance this week. However, he plans to announce some big news about his next career steps, seeing his TV show experience as a stepping stone for greater things.

La'Chelsea King Vies for 'American Idol'
La'Chelsea King of Tifton placed second in Albany's Fox 31's "American Idol" auditions in Tifton during the past week. The winner, Marcus Holloway of Moultrie,
 was chosen to represent Southwest Georgia at the "Idol" auditions in Atlanta.
But a couple of days later, King was told she also is being given an opportunity to represent the region at Atlanta's "American Idol" auditions. That's her at left with Marcus Holloway in the Fox 31 photo.
"I literally cried while on the phone with Fox 31's president, Brenda Holloway! I am still in awe," King told the Tifton Grapevine. "This opportunity alone is a dream come true."
She has really become "Tifton's Idol." King will compete in Atlanta on July 26.

SHERIFF ELECTED REGION VP
Scarbrough Stresses Boys Ranch Support
 Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough has been elected regional vice president of Region 8 of the Georgia Sheriff's Association. The election came this week at the GSA's Summer Conference July 18-18 in Augusta.
"I am honored to have been nominated and subsequently elected to hold that office," Scarbrough said. "I will do my very best to serve the sheriffs and the GSA in Region 8," which encompasses 18 counties.
On his Facebook page, Scarbrough noted that "one of my main goals will be stressing the importance of giving the Georgia Sheriff's Boys Ranch and Youth Homes as much support as we possibly can both financially, by helping raise the funds they need to operate and by making the citizens in Region 8 aware of the amazing work that these people do with all the kids at these homes. "I sat there today and listened to several of the kids who are residents of the Ranch and Youth Homes give a brief testimony of their lives before, and what they have accomplished since becoming residents of our homes. If anyone can sit through that experience and come out of it with dry eyes, you are a very strong person, much stronger than I." Scarbrough asks that folks consider joining the Georgia Sheriff's Association and making a donation to the Boy's Ranch and Youth Homes. "Every dollar helps; you don't have to empty your bank account, just give a little or a lot -- whatever you can afford," he said.

HEALTH RESOURCE FAIR
'Don't Just Sit ... Get Up and Get Fit!'
The annual Back to School Health Resource Fair at the Tift County Health Department will be from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 26.
The fair is for school children of all ages. Start the upcoming school year off the right with a commitment to being healthier.
Find out about and get immunizations needed for school, certified birth certificates and screenings for hearing, vision and dental health. Various school and community resources will be available.
Several vendor tables may still be reserved, as well as door prizes may be donated for children and their parents.

'Mims Kids' Works to Motivate Students
Mims Kids Inc., a local organization for the betterment of young people, will hold its second annual "Stay in School Rally" from noon to 3 p.m. July 27 at the Tift County Recreation Department on Victory Drive.
 The rally is for students in grades 9-12. Judge Larry Mims and his wife Joyce, seen at left, organized Mims Kids in 1994 to expose young people to the arts and to improve their self-esteem and leadership abilities. This year's event includes school supplies, door prizes, refreshments, information tables, music and motivational speakers, who will include school principals, coaches, Mayor Jamie Cater, Schools Superintendent Patrick Atwater and Darrien Teals, local entrepreneur and owner of the Georgia Firebirds semi-pro football team.

The Keep America Beautiful organization is administering a "Graffiti Hurts" grant program to assist communities in local graffiti prevention activities.
"With municipal government funding under increasing burdens, KAB believes that the grant program will serve as a catalyst to combat the economic and quality-of-life setback caused by graffiti vandalism," the organization said.
Keep America Beautiful is offering six grants for the 2013 program: Four cash grants of $2,500 each; two paint product grants from the Sherwin-Williams Co., valued at $2,500 each; and one FlashCAM from Q-Star Technology, valued at $6,995.

IT'S SWIM TIME!
Thousands Coming to Town for State Swim Meet
Tifton is hosting the 2013 Georgia Receation and Park Association's Class B/C State Swim Meet beginning at 7 a.m. Friday July 19 and continuing through Saturday July 20.
There will be 775 swimmers and approximately 4,500 to 5,000 folks from about 30 different communities across the state in attendance at the Tift County Recreation Department pool off Second Street, says Craig Sowell, Tift recreation director.
A snapshot of each day of the meet:
- Warm-ups begin between 7 and 7:30 a.m. and continue through 8:30 a.m.
- Coaches meeting at 8:30 a.m.
- Opening ceremony at about 8:50 a.m.
- Preliminary Session begins about 9 a.m.
- At the end of morning sessions, there is a mandatory three-hour break from competition.
- Warm-ups for afternoon session resumes within an 1�-hour time frame from end of last preliminary event.
- Afternoon session starts 3 to 4 p.m. depending on weather and speed of meet.
- Awards Ceremony starts about 6 or 6:30 p.m. depending on weather and speed of meet.

John L. Williams, 78, of Adel, well-known regional entrepreneur, died Saturday, July 13, at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta following a  sudden illness.
Williams, born Oct. 23, 1934, in Lowndes County, lived most of his life in Cook County. He founded his company business on Interstate 75 in 1963 in Cecil. In 1973, he moved his business headquarters, Williams Investment Co., to Adel where he opened the King Frog retail complex. Over the years, the family-operated business, which included hotels, expanded into Lowndes and Tift counties, and is said to be the second-oldest tourism business established on I-75.
