Tifton's biggest TV and movie star, young Caitlin Carmicheal, has a big fall season. She is having a couple of films being released, and this
 week she wrapped up filming another appearance on CBS TV's long-running "Criminal Minds" drama.
"Having lots of fun on the set of 'Criminal Minds,'!" Caitlin, 9, wrote on Facebook this week. "So great to work with everyone again! ... It's a really scary episode that will air around Halloween."
Caitlin reports that she also recently "did my first episode on the Nickelodeon cartoon 'The Legend of Korra.' "
The daughter of Tifton accountant Tom Carmichael and his wife Cathy, Caitlin is
 especially excited about her co-starring role in the film "A Country Christmas" being released on Oct. 29 on DVD.
"YAY!!! The Dove Foundation gives 'A Country Christmas' its highest rating as 'Dove Family Approved and Suitable for All Ages.' I can't wait for everyone to see it! It's going to be sooooooo good!!!!!" she writes. The film is produced by Kix Brooks of the country duo Brooks & Dunn, and includes singer Trace Adkins and character actor Kevin Pollack, who has appeared in numerous movies, including "A Few Good Men" with Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson. And just this past week, on Tuesday, Sept. 10, the movie "Lizzie" was released, an updated and modern-day reimagining of the Lizzie Borden story. "It's scary!!!!" The film stars Corbin Bernsen, ("LA Law" and "Psych") and Gary Busey. Although reviews have been mixed, Caitlin's performance is noted as a bright spot: "The film does contain a child actor playing the role of a young Lizzie (Caitlin Carmichael) whose scream and horrified expression is priceless, proving the film its most authentic bloodcurdling moment," writes HorrorNews.net. Among other upcoming roles, Caitlin has a part in the big-budget film "300: Rise of an Empire," to be released in March. It's a sequel to the 2006 hit, "300."

MUSIC & DANCE AT THE TIFT
INCLUDES 'TIFTON IDOL' WINNERS
This Saturday, Sept. 14, come to the Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts for
"An Evening of Music and Dance Extravaganza" beginning at 7 p.m.
The show  features the winner of the recent "Tifton Idol" competition, Marcus Holloway, which was a preliminary contest for "American Idol."
Also performing will be Tifton's La'Chelsea King, who came in second in the Tifton Idol contest, as well as Michael Johnson and Temekia Reese.
Dance will be provided by The Dance King J.j. Jackson & Company.
All seats are $10.

COLLEGE AN 'ECONOMIC ENGINE' FOR AREA, STUDY SAYS
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College's total economic impact on the Tiftarea totaled more than $261 million during the 2012 fiscal year, according to a study commissioned by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
ABAC President David Bridges believes the economic impact of the college will be even higher next year: "Look at the facts; we have more students this fall. More importantly, we have more residential students staying on campus in ABAC Lakeside and ABAC Place and in rental properties around town. We have over 900 students enrolled in bachelor's degree programs. Those students are going to be here for four years or more."
Dr. Jeff Gibbs, a retired ABAC economics professor, analyzed the data and found that ABAC sustained 15,205 jobs in Tifton and surrounding communities during that fiscal
 year. He said that is based on direct expenditures of $107,369,226 from student spending, personnel services, operating expenses and capital outlays.
"ABAC shows its importance as an economic engine for t
his area by not only educating people for future jobs but by directly supporting present jobs," Gibbs said.
He said ABAC today provides 512 direct jobs but expenditures support an additional 1,191 jobs, resulting in a ratio of 2.32 off-campus jobs for each on-campus position.
President Bridges says colleges are stabilizers to the community, no matter the economic climate.
"We have some businesses in Tift County that have been here a long time," Bridges said. "That's great. But we have other businesses that are gone before you know it. Businesses come and go," Bridges said. "Colleges come and grow."

PLIGHT Inc. sponsors a "Back to School Workshop" at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Neighborhood Community Service Center at 2737 S. Central Ave. in Tifton.
The objective is to enlighten the community on survival tips for having a successful school year.

BENEFITS RUTH'S COTTAGE, PATTICAKE HOUSE
 The 11th Annual Champions of Hope sporting clays tournament, beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, benefits Ruth's Cottage and the Patticake House in Tifton.
The tournament is being held at the Green Lakes Hunting Club, 127 Phlox Road, Ocilla.

CMA NOMINATES KIP MOORE
TIFTON SINGER VIES FOR NEW ARTIST OF YEAR AWARD
Kip Moore, Tifton native and platinum-selling singer/songwriter, this week has been nominated for the 2013 Country Music Association's award for New Artist of the Year.
Moore has had three No. 1 hits -- "Somethin' 'Bout a Truck," "Beer Money" and "Hey Pretty Girl" -- from his first studio album "Up All Night," which was last year's top-selling debut country album.
The Chicago Sun-Times calls the Tift County High graduate, "A kind of magical cross between the songwriting talents of a Jackson Browne, the grit of a Bruce Springsteen and the twang of a Willie Nelson or Merle Haggard; Moore has taken the top spot when it comes to the title of one of country music's most promising new stars."
He says his first No. 1 hit, "Somethin' 'Bout a Truck," is "about a memory from Tifton. In high school there was this girl I really wanted the attention of. I drove this Izuzu Stylus. It was a piece of junk. It was the farthest thing from a chick magnet you could get and she never paid any attention to me. One day it broke down and Dad let me drive his truck. All of a sudden, this girl noticed me. We had a date in that truck and I knew it was the truck that got her there. She was driving the truck by the end of the date."
Moore is nominated for the CMA New Artist Award along with Lee Brice, Brett Eldredge,
Florida Georgia Line and Kacey Musgraves. The 2013 CMA Awards air live on Nov. 6 on ABC-TV at 8 p.m.

 Seniors may update their driving skills and earn a discount from their automobile insurance provider. The Leroy Rogers Senior Center at 315 West 2nd St. in Tifton is hosting a one-day AARP Driver Safety Program on Monday, Sept. 30 from 10:30 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. AARP developed the six-hour classroom refresher to help drivers 50 years and older to improve their skills and prevent crashes. It covers age-related physical changes, rules of the road and updates on recent changes in the law. with three opportunities to attend this fall.

The 10th Annual Omega Pepper Festival is Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13 and 14, at Ponder Park and Omega Clubhouse in Omega.
There will be arts & crafts, food vendors, a kids' amusement park, a 24-foot rock wall, games, contests -- and peppers!
 A gospel sing on Friday will be from 5:30-10 p.m. with Southern gospel music. OnSaturday, 8 a.m.-10 p.m., will be a 5K run/1-mile fun walk, parade, Omega Idol contest, music, and fun all day. On Saturday, Gary Griffin and Friends perform at 4 p.m. (Griffin is pastor at Omega Methodist Church and the band plays older country/rock and bluegrass); The Blue Factor at 6 p.m. (Beach Boys-type music); and Faith Jackson (pictured at right who now lives in Nashville and is an accomplished singer) at 8 p.m.

The third season of the ABAC Presents! Performing Arts Series at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College features five performances ranging from the classic sounds of a symphony orchestra to a jazz saxophonist.
The series kicks off at 3 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Tift County High School Performing Arts Center with "East Meets West" by the Albany Symphony Orchestra featuring internationally renowned guzheng artist Su Chang. The guzheng is a Chinese-plucked zither with 18 or more strings and movable bridges.
Other performances in the series include:
- "It's A Wonderful Life Live from WVL Radio Theatre," 7 p.m. Dec. 5, ABAC's Howard Auditorium;
- Azalea Quartet, 7 p.m., Feb. 18, 2014, Howard Auditorium;
