The Tift County High School Blue Devils, sporting their new uniforms and helmets, marched into a muddy Brodie Field on Thursday, Aug. 22 and whipped the Monroe High Tornadoes of Albany, 40-12, in a preseason scrimmage game.
The scrimmage had been postponed from the week before because of inclement weather, and Brodie Field was soggy Thursday night because of rain earlier in the day. The conditions, however, had no effect on the Blue Devils as they rolled up 435 total yards of offense.
Tift County begins its regular season next Friday night, Aug. 30, against the Westover Patriots at home at The Brodie.

GRAND OPENING
TIFTAREA YMCA
CELEBRATES NEW FACILITY
The Tiftarea YMCA will hold a ribbon-cutting and formal grand opening at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 for its new facility at 1657 S. Carpenter Road in Tifton.
The new Y building contains state-of-art fitness equipment, a 3,000-square-foot aerobics center, a child-watch area, a ladies-only fitness center, a youth recreational area, locker room, showers and more.
The facility is a collaboration with Tift Regional Health System (TRHS), which owns the building. TRHS renovated part of the building for the hospital to operate as a Community Events Center for community seminars, health screenings and other community events.

Georgia's music scene is alive and well in all genres. The amount of musical talent our state produces is astounding.
As a former music reviewer (in the '70s I reviewed concerts by such artists as the Allman Brothers; Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; and Alice Cooper in their heyday) I am always excited to hear a young band with roots in classic rock and blues who is also solidly contemporary.
Enter "Brother Hawk" of Atlanta. At the indieATL studios in Atlanta recently, they played some of their songs, including "Midnight in Tifton" from their recent album, "Affairs of Plain Living." Click on the video above.
After seeing the video, I asked lead singer-guitarist-songwriter J.B. Brisendine about the inspiration for "Midnight in Tifton."
Matthew Mammola of indieATL wrote that "ever since they stopped by our studios to show off some tunes, Brother Hawk's fandom has risen non-stop, and for good reason. The music's Southern roots are just as apparent as its broad appeal. Brother Hawk rings out a beautiful collection of melodies that are bound to transport even the most resistant listeners into the story of a sweet Southern tale."
They are an up-and-coming band from Atlanta; remember, you heard it here!

WWALS Conference Will Provide Information
 South Georgia's Flint River ranks second on the American Rivers endangered rivers list. Obviously, water management is an important issue in our region.
A water conference Saturday, Aug. 24 will address the region's hydrology and discuss upcoming legislation that may affect the local watershed. The conference will be 9 a.m.-noon at NESPAL on the UGA Tifton Campus on Rainwater Road.
The WWALS Watershed Coalition, an advocacy group working for watershed conservation of the Willacoochee, Withlacoochee, Alapaha and Little River systems watershed in South Georgia and North Florida, is sponsoring the meeting.
Gordon Rogers, the Flint Riverkeeper, and Neill Herring, an environmental lobbyist, will speak. As riverkeeper, Rogers' goal is to restore and preserve the habitat, water quality and flow of the Flint River.
An optional "bring your own brown bag" lunch and discussion about water quality and quantity and invasive species will be held from noon-1 p.m.

SUPPORT OUR GIRL SCOUTS
Annual Yard Sale is Saturday, Aug. 31
 Girl Scouts Troop 40369 of Tift County is having their annual Yard Sale beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31 at Victory Baptist Church. The sale will help the troop with activities for the girls to start their new year.
Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia will also start their fall "Nuts, Candy and Magazine Sale" on Sept. 16. The annual Girl Scout cookie sale begins in January 2014.

SHERIFF'S GOSPEL SING
Dixie Echoes, Diamonds to Perform in Tifton
The renowned gospel group, the Dixie Echoes, and The Diamonds with their Southern gospel sound will headline the Sheriff's Annual Gospel Sing, set for 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at the Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts in Historic Downtown Tifton.
Tickets are $10 in advance, available at Western Auto on Main Street, and $12 at the door.
For more than 50 years, the Dixie Echoes have been delivering the gospel message in song across America. Considered to be one of the pioneer gospel groups, the Dixie Echoes have returned to their roots singing around two microphones with just a piano. Respected among their peers and industry leaders alike, the Dixie Echoes are recognized as one of the premier groups in gospel music.

TIFTON TO GET A
'DOUBLE SHOT (OF MY BABY'S LOVE)'
Tifton's premier social event of the season -- a "Beach Ball" with the 1960's Top 40 band, the Swingin' Medallions -- is coming on Friday, Sept. 20, to the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center.
Sponsored by the Tifton-Tift County Public Library Foundation, the event includes a catered, black-tie optional, gourmet dinner before the performance, or tickets may be purchased for the show only.
The Swingin' Medallions, a high-energy band based in Greenwood, S.C., are known for their million-seller hit in 1966, "Double Shot (of My Baby's Love)," and their Top 40 hits in 1966 and '69: "She Drives Me Out of My Mind," and "Hey, Hey Baby."
 Tickets are $75 each for the dinner and show, and are $30 each for the show only. Dinner/show tickets must be purchased by Sept. 18. Show only tickets will be available up to show time. The dinner begins at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 8:15 p.m.
A dance floor will be available for those who wish to dance to the music of what the late Atlanta columnist Lewis Grizzard once called "the Party Band of the South."
Tickets may be purchased at the Tifton-Tift County Public Library, at Ameris Bank's main Tifton branch, and are available from any member of the Library Foundation board of directors, chaired by Dr. Hal Henderson. Information is available at 229-386-2237.
Proceeds are used to help the library with youth programs, books and other materials.
