Following months of community meetings, the City of Tifton is ready to revise its codes regulating signage.
At its workshop Thursday night, City Council received its staff
recommendations for revising the sign language: Allowing direct lighting of signs in the Historic District, and letting businesses use a banner and up to five stick signs in the district.
The proposal is a compromise reached by residents and businesses in the Historic District, and endorsed by representatives of the Historic Preservation Commission and the Planning Commission, said Bert Crowe, city environmental management director.
City Councilwoman Marianna Keesee also suggested the city amend its Land Development Code to officially allow blinking, flashing and scrolling signs in commercial zones. Such signs are currently prohibited throughout the city but are nonetheless being used.
Council is expected to vote on the revisions at its next meeting in October.

COMMUNITY PROJECT ENDS WITH SALE
Tifton is growing greener -- and it's not just the recent record rainfall. South Georgia's first "zero-energy" home has been sold.

A three-way partnership made up of the University of Georgia, Moultrie Technical College and the Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence pulled off the ambitious project. Green architectural leader Cadmus Construction of Atlanta and national award-winning builder Tony Grahame guided UGA and MTC workers, along with numerous local volunteers and patrons recruited by the education foundation, through the construction of the unique house.
"Air quality, energy efficiency, comfort, longevity, economics, environmental impact, esthetics, neighborhood compatibility, edible landscaping, rainwater catchment and much more were taken to the limit," says Mike Brumby, executive director of the education foundation.
"Tifton can share the pride of the new owner in this unique enhancement of its town," Brumby says.

Tift Regional Medical Center is holding a free community seminar to provide information about Lap-Band weight-loss surgery
with three opportunities to attend this fall.
 Christopher Smith, M.D., board-certified general surgeon, will discuss the procedure and eligibility requirements for patients.

CONCERTS IN THE PARK
FREE SERIES CONTINUES WITH ELVIS TRIBUTE
Downtown Tifton's fall Concerts in the Park open Friday, Sept. 20, with Jeff
 Vandenberg, an Elvis tribute artist. The free concert will be at noon at Veteran's Memorial Park. Vandenberg lives in Chula and has been doing his Elvis tribute show for more than a dozen years. The concert series continues on Sept. 27 with the Singing Samaritans; Oct. 4, Mood Doc; Oct. 11, Abby Chaney; Oct. 18, Joy Johnson; and Oct. 25, Angie Carr.
The free weekly noontime concert series is the brainchild of Frank Sayles Jr., former publisher of The Tifton Gazette and now editor and publisher of the Tifton Grapevine. Sayles got the idea in 2003 and began the concert series in April 2004 at the Tifton Gardens stage, enlisting the Tift Theatre and the Main Street program as initial co-sponsors with the newspaper.
The concerts remain sponsored by the Gazette and the Tifton Main Street program.

TRUCK & TRACTOR PULL
PULLS INTO TIFTON SEPT. 27
The Tifton Truck and Tractor Pull rolls into town Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, at the American Legion Fairgrounds.
Sponsored by the Lucas Oil Pro Pulling League and the Southern Pullers Association, truck and tractor pullers from all across the Southeast will compete for Southern Pullers Association Championship points and prize money.
"The new 8500 pound Light Pro Stock tractors class is a great one to watch. These tractors are more powerful and faster than the Super Farm Tractors. The Southern Pullers have also added a Diesel Class," says Tyron Spearman, coordinator.
The Tifton Truck and Tractor Pull is coordinated by the Ag Equipment Technology Club at ABAC with proceeds going to their pulling tractors, Altered Allis and Cracker Jack, as well as Club activities. Admission: $15 adults, $5 children under 12.
Gates open at 5 p.m. and the pull starts at 7 p.m. one mile east of Downtown Tifton on Highway 82 at the American Legion Fairgrounds. Concessions are available. For information, contact Spearman, 229-386-0216, [email protected]

'Rumplestiltskin'
PUPPETS AT THE
TIFT THEATRE
"Rumplestiltskin" is being presented at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21,
 at the Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts in Historic Downtown Tifton. Presented by the Columbia, S.C., Marionette Theatre, this show is a fast-paced comedic take on the original Brothers Grimm story in which Gwendolyn, the daughter of a poor miller, weaves straw into gold with the help of the troll, Rumplestiltskin, for the greedy king. However, Gwendolyn soon discovers that his help comes with a very high price. The show is for all ages. Tickets are $10 each.

LA FIESTA del PUEBLO
RETURNS SEPT. 28
Authentic food, festive music, traditional dances, arts and crafts, and a children's carnival are part of the annual Fiesta del Pueblo, the biggest celebration of Hispanic Culture in South Georgia.
The annual festival will be Saturday, Sept. 28 at Tifton's Fulwood Park from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Local musicians will perform traditional music, cumbia, salsa, merengue, and other  Latin rhythms. The children's area will include a giant slide, bounce house, dunking booth and obstacle course. Booths with information about health, educational, and social services will be located in the festival area.
Food vendors will prepare a variety of typical dishes from different countries. The festival is free and open to the public. In 2012, the festival attracted more than 6,000 people from 33 counties and five states.
In 2004, La Fiesta del Pueblo was recognized by the Georgia Council for the Arts, Office of the Governor -- Grassroots Arts Program, as an Outstanding Recipient of Grassroots funding. Gov. Sonny Perdue indicated that La Fiesta, as well as seven other projects around the state, show how arts can change lives and can be used a tool to strengthen Georgia communities.
The purpose of La Fiesta del Pueblo is to strengthen the network of Hispanic area residents, to promote cultural awareness among South Georgia residents, to provide opportunities for Hispanics to gain visibility in the community and promote a sense of pride, and to share information on health, education, community activities,youth organizations and social services.

ANNUAL RUN BENEFITS
The 6th Annual "Jog for Jake" 5K and 1-Mile Run is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5 at Tift County High School.
The event raises money for Toys for Tots to benefit Tift County children at Christmas. To date, more than $90,000 has been raised to purchase toys for needy children.
The "Jog For Jake" road race is held in memory of Jake Stewart, an extraordinary young man who had a deep love for children. Jake was killed in a car accident Nov. 25, 2007, while he was a student at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville.
There is a fee to register for the road race; a silent auction also will be held.

BIKE TO FARM
Bike Tour Features Local Farms
 The Wiregrass Farmers Market is hosting a "Bike To Farm Tour" on Sunday, Oct. 6 to benefit the market and the Tiftarea
 Greenways Association.
Cyclists will follow a casual 18-mile loop ride featuring four farm stops, each showcasing a different point of agricultural interest and light refreshments. There is a chance to tour a small dairy and fiber goat farm with a market egg production area; a high-tech backyard chicken operation with a raised bed veggie production area; a native longleaf pine habitat and native flower garden; and a test banana plot.
Registr ation opens at 12:30 p.m., with the event starting at 1:30 p.m. Cyclists must be able to complete the circuit within three hours.
The ride begins and ends at the parking lot of the Georgia Museum of Agriculture Country Store, just west of I-75, Exit 63-B.
All participants will get free snacks/drinks at the tour stops while supplies last. Restrooms available at the start. Event t-shirts will be available for purchase separately, if desired.
A two farm-stop 9-mile route is available for those not up to the full 18-mile route.
Helmets are required.

 'EAST MEETS WEST'
PERFORMING ARTS SERIES BEGINS WITH SYMPHONY
The third season of the ABAC Presents! Performing Arts Series at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College begins at 3 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Tift County High School Performing Arts Center with "East Meets West" by the Albany Symphony Orchestra, featuring internationally renowned guzheng artist Su Chang.
The guzheng is a Chinese-plucked zither with 18 or more strings and movable bridges.
Chang, pictured at right, will perform "Identity: Zhongshand Zhuang," a striking and distinctive piece that combines the richness of the Western orchestra with the 3,800-year-old Chinese folk instrument. "Identity" bears the musical signature of Eastern and Western musical traditions.
Eastern influences will also be heard as the orchestra performs Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber and von Weber's Overture to Die Freischutz.
Tickets for the entire performing arts series are $50 for adults, $20 for students under 18, and $125 for a Family Pass that includes two adults and two or more student passes, available online at www.purplepass.com/abac and by phone at (229) 391-4895.
Available tickets will be sold at the door for individual shows at $15 adults and $10 students under 18.
