BRUNDIBAR, MIDLAND CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

LITTLE THEATER,

April 6, 8 pm, April 7 3pm

ABOUT BRUNDIBR: The Czechoslovakian children's opera Brundibr premiered in the concentration camp at Terezin in September 1943, with 54 additional performances the following year. It tells the story of a brother and
sister searching for milk to nourish their ailing mother. Brundibr was used for the Nazi propaganda film "The Fhrer Gives the Jews a City," after which all the participants, including the composer, were sent to Auschwitz where most were gassed upon arrival. Brundibr has become a symbol of the struggle to sustain artistic culture in the
face of imminent peril.

A Celebration of Hope is a Holocaust remembrance concert. The program will feature a performance of Holocaust Cantata written by David McCullough. It will be

followed by a choir of local youth performing a fully staged version of the Czechoslovakian children's opera Brundibar, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner. Directed by James Hohmeyer, Cheryl Levy & Larry Levy.

Stay after the program for a 15-minute informational talkback with performers.

Tickets: $15

JEWS AND BASEBALL,

FLINT INSTITUTE OF ARTS,

APRIL 11th, 7pm

featuring Irwin S. Cohen, "Mr. Baseball"

Native Detroiter Irwin Cohen has built a national reputation as an author,

columnist and lecturer. The author of ten history books, including the

highly-regarded, "Echoes of Detroit's Jewish Communities: A History," Irwin

is one of only a few writers to have interviewed the legendary Jewish hero

Hank Greenberg and is likely the only synagogue president in Detroit history

to wear a World Series ring, an honor received when he served as Director of

Group Sales for the Detroit Tigers. Irwin generously shares his vast

knowledge of Jewish history with the community by capturing the stories of

many of Detroit's old Jewish landmarks and shuls. He has just been named the

recipient of the 2013 Leonard N. Simons History Award, a prestigious annual

award presented by the

Jewish Historical Society of Michigan. His tenth book, "Jewish History in the Time of Baseball's Jews" has just been

released. Mr. Cohen will speak and take questions following the presentation of the film Jews and Baseball on April 11, 2013 at the Flint Institute of Arts.
