Well, everyone - the countdown is on! One week until the launch of PRISMA 2013!
Welcome to the third edition of our PRISMA newsletter. This issue features an article on Tobin Stokes, a prolific composer and Powell Riverite at heart. Read on to learn more about Tobin, as well as three of our other distinguished guest artists. Don't miss the information about A Celebration of the Senses, an event presented by PRISMA on June 20.

PRISMA presents... A CELEBRATION OF THE SENSES
Indulge your senses as you taste all kinds of food, see the art and scenic landscape and listen to the sounds of a variety of musical genres, including PRISMA's own orchestra.
Enjoy tasting food from Ayu Sushi to Go, Little Hut Curry, Mexican Food, Tiny Lil' Donuts and more. Bring a blanket and the family to enjoy your dinner to the sounds of celtic group Cluinn, the PRISMA orchestra, a sousaphone, the pipe band and jazz ensemble SlAM.
This event will take place at from 5pm to 9pm on Thursday, June 20 at Willingdon Beach. Visit our PRISMA booth at the event to purchase concert tickets, and browse the other community booths.

Composer extraordinaire
TOBIN STOKES
With a childhood rooted in Powell River, Tobin Stokes has been composing music for close to 20 years. Whether composing for film, opera, orchestra, choir, television, theatre, chamber ensembles or soloists, Stokes seems to have done it all.
After his first piano lesson at the age of three, Stokes' musical career began to accelerate. At age seven, he became a member with the Powell River Boys' Choir, with which he performed, competed and toured internationally until the age of fourteen. Stokes then went on to complete a Bachelor's of Music in Percussion at the University of Victoria.
Stokes returned to Powell River in 1994 to become the Composer in Residence at the biannual International Choral Kathaumixw Festival, a position he has held ever since. There he composed Kathaumixw's anthem, The Spacious Firmament, a mass choir piece. Stokes will return to the Sunshine Coast for Kathaumixw in 2014.
Stokes' career led him back to Powell River yet again as the Composer in Residence to the Symphony Orchestra of the Pacific (SOAP) in 2004 and now for the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA). He has also been commissioned by the Victoria Symphony as a composer in residence from 2006 to 2009. In addition to PRISMA, Stokes is the Composer in Residence for the Urban Youth Choir Festival in Orebro, Sweden.
Other events that have commissioned Stokes include the 2010 Winter Olympics, the Elektra Women's Choir, CBC Radio, the XV Commonwealth Games and Ballet British Columbia. His work for films has been aired on all major networks in Canada as well as various networks in over a dozen other countries.
Stokes' past work as performer, music director, sound designer and composer has fuelled his interest in creating music for operas. His three operas now in development are Rattenbury, Fallujah, and Pauline.
A childhood of music --
piano, choir, and percussion -- in his hometown of Powell River has led Stokes to his current, prolific career that will be shared with students, faculty and audiences at PRISMA.

Born in the Lower Mainland, Gwen Seaton's work has lead her to a position as the Second Bassoon for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
Seaton received her Bachelor's of Music from the University of British Columbia where she studied with Jesse Read and Chris Millard. In 2009, she received her Master's of Music when studying with Ben Kamins at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. Later that year, Seaton became Second Bassoon for VSO.
Prior to the completion of her Master's degree, Seaton performed with Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra as Second Bassoon and with the Vancouver Opera as Acting Principal Bassoon.
A selection of songs from Seaton's final grad performance was aired on NPR's
"Performance Today".
Seaton will be performing with the Schubert Octet for the coming season.
During PRISMA, Seaton will be leading a Bassoon and Flute Masterclass on June 26 with fellow guest artist Shelley Brown, as well as performing in the Faculty Chamber Music Concerts on June 21 and 26.

Alain Desgagn�
Originally from Jonqui�re, Qu�bec, Alain Desgagn� has been the Associate Clarinet in the Ochestre Symphonique de Montr�al since 2001. Prior to this position he had been the Principal Clarinet of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Second and Assistant Clarinet in the Victoria Symphony.
Desgagn� received his Master's and Certificate degrees from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, under the direction of Robert Marcellus. He was also awarded a First Prize from Conservatoire de Musique du Qu�bec with John van Bockern.
In addition to a career in performing, Desgagn� is on faculty at the Faculty of Music of McGill University and has been a clarinet instructor at the Marrowstone Music Festival in Bellingham, Washington since 1990.
Desgagn� is a member of the group Kiosque as well as the Pi Kappa Lambda Musical Honor Society.
During PRISMA, Desgagn� will hold an Oboe and Clarinet Masterclass with fellow guest artist Roger Cole on June 19. He will also perform with the first Faculty Chamber Music Concert on June 21.

Keith MacLeod
After being born in Quebec and growing up in Manitoba, Keith MacLeod began his music career when he moved to Vancouver as an adolescent. There, he worked with Wes Foster and Ronald De Kant.
Later, in 1976, MacLeod studied clarinet in Chicago with Robert Marcellus. Having performed with the Milwaukee Symphony and Ballet, Calgary Philharmonic and the Winnipeg, Seattle and Vancouver Symphonies, MacLeod settled down in Victoria as Principal Clarinet for the Victoria Symphony.
In addition to his wealth of experience as a performer, MacLeod is a Yamaha artist. He has given Masterclasses across Canada, America and even in Europe.
MacLeod works as a composer of chamber, orchestral and film music. He also gives frequent guest lectures at the University of Victoria, the University of British Columbia, Lousiana State University and many summer festivals.
MacLeod will be at PRISMA for its second week and will perform with the Faculty Chamber Music Concert on June 26.

By volunteering with PRISMA, you can make an important contribution to the faculty and participating students, as well as to the larger community. PRISMA needs volunteers for Public Relations, Fundraising and Administration who are willing to work throughout the year. We can also use focused help in a variety of areas during the festival June 18-28. PRISMA welcomes whatever kind of help you can give. It's a great way to meet people and access concerts!
