Of Course - Notes and News |
"Peace and be still a little while, and see how far you rise above the world when you release your mind from chains and let it seek the level where it finds itself at home. It will be grateful to be free a while. It knows where it belongs. But free its wings, and it will fly in sureness and in joy to join its holy purpose. Let it rest in its Creator, there to be restored to sanity, to freedom, and to love."

WINGS of LOVE
There is a Celestial Speedup occurring that many of us are becoming aware of. A sense of speedup could be likened to the winds of a cyclone twirling around and around as they head toward the Stillness at its core. Perhaps that is the Speedup. We are coming back to our Sacred Core, the Center of our Being; a Center from which we have never truly left. As the quote from A Course in Miracles above mentions, when we release the chains we have placed on our minds, they are irresistibly drawn towards the heart of God, our true Home.
Our Guest Article is from Gene Skaggs and is titled: "Forgiveness 1-2-3". Gene is the author of four books on A Course in Miracles as well as a book written "about his son who laid his body down at the age of 22 in 2009." More information is at his website: http://www.geneskaggs.com/
The GAFF segment this month by Lorena Peter is called: "GAFF and the Ocean of Plenty" and is a continuation of the story from last month. GAFF continues to lovingly challenge Priscilla in her application and understanding of ACIM Lesson 24 "I do not perceive my own best interests", this time highlighting her thoughts towards someone in her life she has judged.
This March the winds bring with them the beautiful sound of the Love Flute in our MUSIC segment as Pamela Whitman shares the "Beautiful Journey" in her Article: "Irresistible Love".
Daniel Tipton shares with us this month, in his segment DARE TO BE HAPPY, a dilemma he is processing in regard to choosing employment that will be fulfilling.
"It Rides On The Wings of Love" by J. Michaels is our POEM this month taken from J.'s book, "The Poet's Quill". If you missed it, in the February 2010 CIMS Newsletter, RejaJoy and Karen Bentley review the novella J. had written called, "Treasure of the Mind", which is a"fictionalized story of J. Michael's recovery from grief and guilt after the death of his teen-aged son."
The Question and Answer Article is a continuation by Bart Bacon this month as he expands on the ACIM concept of VISION. Bart is participant in and supporter of the ACIM movement. He is participating on the Community Miracles Center discussion board and is supporting the translation of ACIM into other languages.
Guidance from Elder Brother, scribed by Sun~Rose, appears in this issue on "The Forgiving Heart". Daily Guidance from Elder Brother is now being sent every day to those on the CIMS Daily Lesson Mailing List and can also be read on our BLOG. [To JOIN the mailing list, please go here].

Forgiveness 1-2-3 By GENE SKAGGS
|
Forgiveness, the main doctrine of A COURSE IN MIRACLES is described by personally invoking the taking of two steps followed by the Holy Spirit taking the final one. Sounds simple, 1 - 2 - 3. Let's look at each step individually because each one is independent of the other but naturally leads one to the unfoldment of the next. "This change requires, first, that the cause be identified and then let go, so that it can be replaced." Workbook Lesson 23 The first step is the identification of the cause of the discomfort. I have found this to be, for students, not only the most misunderstood, but the most difficult to implement. Look at the first step and what it says, "that the cause be identified." The identification process is observing the emotional response that the event/person has brought to your awareness. Example: Someone did or didn't do what you have deemed appropriate and the action or lack of action has caused an emotional response to the event might take the form of anger. The first step in the forgiveness process is now complete. You have identified the emotion that you have chosen to keep you from your Source - anger. The identification process is NOT what the other person did, but your emotion to what took place on your perceptual viewing screen/world. "Unless you give it back, it is inevitable that your perspective on reality be warped and uncorrected." - - - A COURSE IN MIRACLES Technically your part in the forgiveness process is complete. The next step is taken by the Holy Spirit and that is the removal of the unwanted emotion of anger. The Course doesn't give you a step four but it explains another step. After the guilt (anger) in your mind has been removed you will have to do something. You might be guided to do nothing, but in the refraining from taking action motivation is done consciously. The Holy Spirit will speak to you and tell you what to do in any particular situation that you have allow the mighty Voice for Truth to be in charge. It will always be a win/win situation for both parties. "The Holy Spirit will not delay in answering your every question what to do. He knows. And He will tell you, and then do it for you." - - - A COURSE IN MIRACLES

Irresistible Love
"The mind that was in me is still irresistibly drawn
to every mind created by God
because God's Wholeness IS the wholeness of His Son."
ACIM OrEd.Tx.5.52
Many moons ago I played in the South Dakota Symphony. One of the many joys of that experience was that I became acquainted with the Lakota People. The Lakota are a tribal band of the Sioux Nation. Each of these bands has their own language, culture and music. The Lakota have a flute called the Love Flute. A Love Flute has a bird on the end.
In South Dakota, I heard that when Lakota men would fall in love they would go to the Elk Dreamer Society and commission a love song. The Elk Dreamers were visionaries in the tribe who had experienced dreams or visions of elk. The elk was said to hold the Love Medicine.
The Course tells us that we all have the Love inside.
I declare us all Elk.
The Elk Dreamer would write the love song for the Love Flute and the man would go to the woman that he loved. He would aim the Love Flute at her heart and play the love song. It was said that the woman would fall irresistibly in love.
When I heard this story, I knew that I had to have one of these flutes for my collection! But I do not know what anything was for.
According to Lakota custom, only men were supposed to play the Love Flute.
So I went to the reservation and participated in a sweat lodge ceremony. I asked permission to play the Love Flute. I was willing.
The road man (medicine man) told me that this flute also holds the power to awaken the love of all people and he gave me permission to play the Love Flute in this way.
The Picture Song is one of these Elk Dreamer Songs. The Love Flute is an image that I have made, a picture of my thoughts. I want to see the Love of God. I extend it to you now.
The Picture Song is from Pamela's CD Beautiful Journey available:

GAFF: And Ocean of Plenty By LORENA R PETER PhD*

Priscilla and Bobby remained with Gaff even as the rest of the crowd drifted away down the beach to whatever they were doing before Bobby hooked THE BIG ONE. They were watching the spectacle of life in the ocean before them. Appreciating the nuances and the synergy; Listening to the crashing waves and the calling birds; Smelling the salt in the damp air brushing against their skin; Feeling the prickles of the sand carried by the wind against their legs.
Suddenly, Priscilla turned to Gaff. "I've been wondering what you do with all the fish you catch, Gaff. You're out here on the beach so much you must have tons of fish stored at home by now."
Bobby laughed. "She's got a good question there, you know. Been wondering that myself. Either your freezer is the size of Iowa or your family have all grown scales and fins by now!"
Gaff laughed with a genuine twinkle in his eyes. "Good question. Especially after all my talk about being a steward of the planet."
Bobby laughed. "That's right."
Gaff got more serious. "You know that fish fry the Reverend Wally's church had last week? The money was for their scholarship fund to help some of the local children get an education."
Bobby turned to him, grinning now. "Your fish?"
Gaff smiled toward Mother Water. "Our fish. Mother Water provided those fish and a bunch of us along the beach donated them to the cause. We do that from time to time."
Priscilla screwed her face into a frown. "Wasn't that the first fish fry Wally had?"
Gaff nodded, "The Methodists have an outreach to help families in need. A lot of groups do. There's more need now, what with the economy so bad and jobs going overseas."
Bobby kicked the sand. "I guess you either buy American stuff or you pay to support the people put out of work."
The silence that followed was filled with thinking, serenaded by sounds of the waves and calling of the gulls.
Priscilla's voice was small. "Bobby, would it be all right to give Harold some of the fish in our freezer? I know he hasn't been on the beach this winter because of his arthritis. And we'll never eat all we have. He's always so friendly when I walk past his house. Waves-offers me tea and cookies. Probably lonely since his wife died."
Gaff went to tend his fishing gear and they followed him. "Be nice to visit him, but I don't think Harold needs any fish just now."
Priscilla nodded with understanding. "Oh."
"You might offer some to Ivy for her family, though."
Priscilla frowned again. "What? That horrible woman who can't talk below a roar? Why would I give her anything but a cold shoulder?"
Bobby grinned. "You could offer her a visit to a counselor. Or a gaff on her noggin to knock some sense into her."
Gaff baited his hook and then turned to look at Priscilla. "Remember that......

Dare to Be Happy By Daniel Tipton*

Finding Fulfilling Employment
DANIEL TIPTON:
I asked: "How important is matching your career up with your spiritual life (Course principals)? Does anyone have experience with working your spirituality into your career? Or how about changing your career to be more in line with your spirituality? I'm making a career change in the hope that I will enjoy work more. However, there is fear that I will run into the same problem if I don't make more of a fundamental change. I know so far that I am thoroughly enjoying my counseling classes. (I'm enrolled in a Masters program in Community Counseling so that I can be a licensed counselor.)"
NOTE: I graduated from the culinary institute and work in food research but was bored. It wasn't supporting me in what I really want to do. I'm now at UNO in the Master's program for Community Counseling and am hoping this is the right choice.
When I was working as a legal secretary and feeling very unfulfilled, I prayed sincerely to God to give me meaningful work and the first thing that happened was He told me I was an undercover minister and was a source of Light for everyone at the law firm where I was working--from the biggest executives down to the mailroom guys. I was astounded as I thought everyone there had more than me (I was single, no children, very lonely, not living up to my potential, etc) ... but then there was the shift in perception and I "got" that it was true that I could be their undercover minister. I accepted that quiet role and let myself glow around the office [:D] The next thing that happened was I was guided to go back to school and become a Gestalt psychotherapist (I was in therapy at the time and healing a lot from it) so I did! I excelled in school in a way I never had before--everything came easily, I did really well. It was four years of demanding schoolwork and financial obligation but I managed it and began my private practice in my 2nd year of school (most people waited until after they graduated). My career has been very rewarding emotionally. ... Hope this helps!
CORINNE ZUPKO:
I'm happy to share my experiences as well! I was led into the counseling field when I was in college. Through my own healing in therapy, I knew it was my calling to help others (though I later realized this was all about healing MY mind.. i.e. "The sole responsibility of the miracle worker is to accept atonement for himself."). I ended up working as a licensed counselor for 10 years in a busy counseling center. Although there was really no way to openly talk about Course principles, I found that I practiced these principles whenever I could, to find my own sense of inner peace (the job became increasingly stressful over the years with an escalating amount of crisis situations occurring). There were definitely some clients who were into exploring their spirituality, and it was really fun to work with these folks. But by far, most of the Course work I did in that job was not verbal but was IN ME (willingness to see my clients differently, willingness to hand over the judgments, what I thought was best for them, willingness to recognize them as my "brothers", etc.).
It's funny as I ponder your question... because

Questions Regarding the Teachings of ACIM
By BARTHOLOMEW P. BACON *
|
QUESTION: Would you please share more of your thoughts regarding 'Vision' that you introduced last month?
ANSWER: In the February issue I discussed the concept of "vision" in ACIM. I wrote that "I think that most of the ACIM community believes that when ACIM speaks about the "vision of Christ" it means simply thinking and feeling differently about what we see." I also offered the opinion that ACIM literally means a different form of visual perception when it speaks about "vision", and if we think Jesus is writing metaphorically in these cases we're going to miss an important aspect of ACIM. I drew a connection between the two different forms of visual perception and the meaning of the word "world", specifically when ACIM speaks of the "two worlds" and when the verb associated with "world" is some form of "see" or "perceive".
Let's continue this discussion, starting with a quote from OrEd.Tx.2.66:
"The mind, however, can bring its illumination to the body by recognizing that density is the opposite of intelligence and therefore unamenable to independent learning. It is, however, easily brought into alignment with a mind which has learned to look beyond density toward light."
As with so many passages in ACIM, this is a little cryptic and we have to ask ourselves what it means. The first thing we have to recognize is that "density" is a property of matter, and the body is composed of matter. Now let's compare that quote from OrEd.Tx.2.66 with the following from OrEd.WkBk.159.5.
"Christ's vision is the bridge between the worlds. And in its power can you safely trust to carry you from this world into one made holy by forgiveness. Things which seem quite solid here are merely shadows there, transparent, faintly seen, at times forgot, and never able to obscure the light that shines beyond them. Holiness has been restored to vision, and the blind can see."
We see the body as solid. WkBk.159.5 says that when we attain Christ's vision we will see objects which now seem solid as transparent, "never able to obscure the light that shines beyond them". Here we can clearly see that the preposition "beyond" is synonymous with "through" in these cases. In these passages about vision, "beyond" is a spatial reference and not a chronological reference. In other words, it has the meaning of "behind" (space) instead of "after" (time). This is important with regards to understanding vision, because ACIM frequently uses "beyond" in important passages about vision. If we think of "beyond" as having chronological meaning, then we think of vision as something that happens later, not now. This is unhelpful because "later" always remains "later" and never happens, plus we lose all understanding of the real meaning of vision.
I believe that when "world" is tied to the verb "see" and when ACIM speaks of "two worlds" then "world" means "what I am seeing and how I am seeing it". In other words, in these cases "world" does not mean the planet, or, by extension, the universe of time, space, matter, and bodies. When we recognize that the titles of Lessons 128 to 130 go together as a group, we see that the title of Lesson 129 is another prominent case where "beyond" is tied to vision:
128. The world I see has nothing that I want.
129. Beyond this world there is a world I want.
130. It is impossible to see two worlds.
We also see "beyond" tied to vision at OrEd.Tx.31.96, the second to last paragraph in the Text:
"In joyous welcome is my hand outstretched to every brother who would join with me in reaching past temptation and who looks with fixed determination toward the light that shines beyond in perfect constancy."
Transparent means we see light coming through material objects. Tx.2.66 says we will see "beyond density toward the light". This is the same meaning as "through matter toward the light", which is the same meaning as transparent. Connecting the dots, Tx.2.66 and WkBk.159.5 are saying the same thing. When we attain the vision of Christ, we will see material objects, including the body, as transparent. My impression from many passages, including the last sentence of the quote from Tx.2.66, is that it is after we have attained vision that many of the more remarkable miracles, such as bringing the health of the body into alignment with the healed mind, will occur. I'll add that I think there are many passages in ACIM that say we will have times when we do not see the body at all. My impression is that we will literally see each other as something other than bodies and that these passages are not metaphorical.
In the big picture I think that ...

Guidance from Elder Brother As Received and Transcribed by Sun~Rose
|

"THE FORGIVING HEART"
ACIM ORIGINAL EDITION
TRANSCRIBER'S NOTE: The Course text is in bold face. The Guidance is in normal type
In His Guidance, He has asked Me to capitalize the pronouns You and We as an acknowledgement of the Divinity of All of Us, an acknowledgement of Equality, an expression of His Love and respect for You.
When You see the word 'YOU' capitalized in the Guidance, know that He is not just speaking to YOU, He is honoring YOU..
~*~
"What more can I say to You about forgiveness that I have not already said to You before, both in the Course and in the daily Guidance? You know all the words, so now must I give You the music and the lovely steps for this dance to freedom.
We will first happily review the words.
A Brother has hurt You, perhaps just one incident, or perhaps chronically. The book says to forgive Your Brother for what He hasn't done. Hasn't done?! Look at Me! I'm lying wounded. I didn't do this to Myself!
Oh, but You did. I do not mean the specifics of an incident, but rather the context of it. You are the One who chose the dream in place of Reality. And the dream is so fecund with possibilities for pain. If You had not stepped eagerly into the dream, 'pain' would be a stranger to You.
You abandoned God; He did not abandon You. Thus You have the Holy Spirit. To God You are as lovely and as perfect as always. And this is Truth for All of You, including the offending Dreamer of the moment.
Since God sees You only in Your beautiful perfection, then this You that God sees must be right here and right now always available to You. The Substance of the You of God is Love. Therefore, You do share His ability to always see with eyes of joyous Love. I ask You now to be willing to let in this possibility of Be-ing. We are now taking the words and setting them to music.
If You do not understand Yourself, how will You understand Your Brother? In the dream the biggest game in town is being better than Your Brother. The easiest way to accomplish this is to make Him wrong to make You right compared to Him. It's really very slick and done with such self-righteous 'honesty'. You know the line: 'I'm just being honest.' If You must be 'honest' then be it about Yourself and not about Your Brother!
When You are willing to accept Your own Perfection, then there's no need to list Your Brother's faults to show that You're much better. Perfection is the music of the spheres. Every bird is singing of It, as are the oceans and the winds. The trees are swaying to Its rhythm. Every ray of light does hum this Love song to the Son of God You are. Won't You sing It for Your Brother?
Two thousand years ago I said to Peter when He did ask how often He must forgive a Brother, was seven times enough; I told him seventy times the seven. He was most astounded. To You I say even more, so You may dance with happiness: never condemn a Brother, never condemn a Sister. Be like the Jews who wrote the Talmud, always finding excuses for another's bad behavior. This is charity.
And then trust that Your loving Vision of Your Brother does bring the Light to Him, so He need no longer sin, for You have given Him His freedom. Thus have You fulfilled the law: Do unto Others. Now peace and happiness are Yours.
