Informing the community about the risks of "smart" meters

"Smart" Meters are NOT Sexy!
When you get your letter from the city saying you don't have a choice on what you put on your home, send a rejection letter "Valentine" to the city!

Put Do NOT Install Smart Meter stickers on your analog meter and front door!

We have the right to say NO!

Thousands of people around the country and world-wideare coming together and standing up for their rights and are saying NO! As a result, the UK has shelved its plans for mandatory installation, giving residents a choice.

California and Maine have real "opt-outs" and residents are able to keep their analog meters. Michigan has 11 resolutions and 4 moratoriums.  California has 46 moratoriums or resolutions against the installation of smart meters.

Think back to all those dysfunctional relationships that we wish we had ended sooner... this relationship-gone-sour with our utility needs a "Dear John" - and FAST!

Our constitutional rights protect us, even as the city bullies and intimidates us into thinking we have no rights.

We have the right to say NO!  Isn't this what we teach our kids?

Here's why "smart" meters are NOT sexy:

They DON'T save money:

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan wrote an article titled "An Experiment Too Expensive for Consumers" where she states: "Consumers don't need to be forced to pay billions for so-called smart technology to know how to reduce their utility bills. How dumb do they think we are?"

Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen: "The pilot results showed no beneficial impact on total energy usage."

They're NOT secure:

GAO (Government Accountability Office) states: "Utilities are focusing on regulatory compliance instead of comprehensive security. The electricity industry does not have metrics for evaluating cyber-security."

Pike Research: "end-to-end protection of private and commercial usage data is impossible."

They're NOT safe:

American Academy of Environmental Medicine on January 19, 2012: "The Board of the AAEM opposes the installation of wireless "smart meters" in homes and schools based on a scientific assessment of the current medical literature."

Harvard trained David Carpenter MD, current Director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany SUNY: "We rely on statistical significance and weight of evidence when drawing conclusions about health effects. There is conclusive scientific evidence for adverse health effects in humans. Clearly the answer is not to install wireless smart meters to begin with."  Video

WHO (World Health Organization): "Lyon France, May 31, 2011, The WHO/IARC has classified radio frequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B)..." This is the same frequency as "smart" meters. DDT and lead are also classified as Class 2B carcinogens. Would you use these in your home?

Other Cities Say NO!:

UK: Plans to force households to have smart meters installed have been shelved over health and privacy fears.  Offical's make smart meters voluntary.
California:  49 local governments oppose installation of "smart" meters, representing 2.7 million people. Moratoriums resulted in PG&E allowing residents to keep analog meters.
Maine:  Legal action resulted in protecting resident's rights to keep analog meters.
Michigan:  11 resolutions against smart meters and 4 moratoriums.
Around the USA:  13 of 17 states who have "smart" meter programs under way have grass roots organizations pushing back, saying NO to their utilities.

Let's be the 3rd state in the country who is saying NO to being bullied, intimidated and frightened into accepting so called "smart" meters that don't make sense.  Maine and California did it, now we need some mid-west representation.  Michigan is well on their way to getting protection on the law books, we can do it too.

"Smart" meters are NOT sexy because they don't save money, are not secure and are not safe for us, especially our kids!

What's SMART about that?

"In matters of style, swim with the current, in matters of principle stand like a rock!"  - Thomas Jefferson
City continues to install despite community concerns
"Smart" meters are not federally mandated.

Naperville's utility and the City Council do not have authority to force a resident to accept a smart meter on their home.

Know your rights! You have the right to say No!

If you do not want a "smart" meter on your home do the following:

Visit our What you can do page for signage and more information.

1) Post a letter of No Consent on your meter and send a copy to the utility, certified mail.

2) Request an Installation Delay.   Call the installer (UPA) at 877-423-3194 and ask for the latest date
possible.  Ask for a specific date and time.  Note the name of the person you speak with.

3) Post a "Do Not Install" sign on your meter and another on your front door.  Samples & stickers
available by clicking here.

4) Be home when the installer tries to replace your meter. Inform them of your rights to say no. Insist

More that you can do
Many residents do not want a smart meter installed on their home.  They want the choice and according to the U.S. Constitution and the Energy Policy Act of 2005, we have that right. The city has denied its residents the choice.

According to the city you will have opportunities to refuse the wireless smart meter, but you must sign up for the non-wireless alternative and pay the monthly penalty fee to protect your home and family. If after the 3rd attempt to install a meter on your home, and you have not signed up for the alternative, the city says it will bring a police escort to your home to intimidate you into allowing the installation of the wireless smart meter.

We feel this is outrageous. There must be something serious wrongly with smart meters if the city has to threaten you to install one.

Naperville Smart Meter Awareness is a group of concerned citizens educating the public about the risks of wireless smart meters. We are comprised of lawyers, technology professionals, health advocates, accountants, business owners and parents in our community.

Smart meters are currently being installed in Naperville despite a complaint for federal injunction and on-going investigations by the Illinois Attorney General for Open Meetings Act violations by the City of Naperville in conjunction with this project.

Smart meters pose risks in the areas of privacy, costs, security, and health and are not a federally mandated program. Our mission is to educate the residents of Naperville by bringing all pertinent information to the public and in doing so, advocate for a smarter solution in Naperville.
