Greetings!
You know, there's an old saying that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. We know that refers to the weather, but lately we've picked up so many heartworm positive dogs it seems as though March truly has come in like a lion! While many rescues and shelters are forced to euthanize heartworm positive dogs because of the high cost of treatment, we choose to treat these dogs - like Willie in the photo on the right...and so, along those lines, we hope two things for March - that you will help us preach the importance of keeping dogs on yearly heartworm preventative, AND that you'll come out to one of our fabulous fundraisers and help us help these dogs! Nine times out of ten our adult dogs' cost (medicals and care) exceeds their adoption fee, and because we receive no government funding, donations from our supporters, and fundraisers, are critical and lifesaving!
Finally, a numbers report! February was a very busy month! We had 149 private adoptions, and 90 lucky pups went up to our shelter partners in CT and MA - that's 239 lives saved and on to forever homes in February and most definitely something to celebrate! Sincerely, Molli Bowen Companion Pet Rescue & Transport

The Valentine's Gala was a huge success!
Thanks so much to all who came out and contributed to a magical night of food, fun and music! The Willow Creek Equestrian Center was packed for this sold out event! CPR supporters came out and enjoyed amazing food and even a signature cocktail, while listening to the Nate Dobas acoustic trio! The highlight of the evening was a slideshow featuring many amazing dogs rescued and adopted over the years. Just over $5,000 was raised thanks to our supporters - this launches our TN shelter fund which we are so excited about! The goal is $800,000 and we'll be dreaming up more fun and exciting projects to help our first year of shelter fundraising get underway! The TN intake facility we're dreaming of will be climate controlled (no more fans and heaters!) and will enable us to save even more pups. We'd also love to have room available for surgeries so that we can expand our low cost spay/neuter outreach. If you've got a fundraising idea that you are willing and able to head up, please email daniellehardee1@gmail.com. It can be something as big or small as you like, and is a great opportunity for scout groups, supporters who sell jewelry, Pampered Chef, and other products, or a give-back program at your area restaurant!

CPR Dogs in Action!
| Baby Rosie's online adoption picture. |
Dear Molli,
Two years ago in February we adopted a little puppy named Baby Rosie (Her name changed to Lyra as soon as we got her). Thank you Thank you for the best little dog anyone could ever imagine. I think that you might have to see and experience some very sad dog stories so I just thought that you might want to hear about this very happy one and it's all thanks to you and your group. As soon as we found out that our application had been accepted, I began to work for East Rock Paws doing a few walks dog walks here and there. Now Lyra and I are East Rock Paws and she accompanies me on about 7 walks per day and goes to the dog park at least twice a day. She is a perfect walker and helps me to keep unruly puppies in line. Last Thanksgiving she actually saved our neighbors car from being stolen by waking us up at 2 in the morning. We called the police and the robber was caught (I know it sounds like a movie) but it happened and our neighbor calls her the hero dog. Anyway we have the best dog and I know at least two families that adopted dogs after they fell in love with Lyra. So Thank you so much again!
I have attached some pictures; the first is the one that you sent us before we adopted her the second and third are at our wedding and the last two are just her.
Sincerely,
Haven Giguere

Foster Pup of the Month: Peanut! |
Peanut is a 5 year old Chi/Dachshund mix that's available to be met and adopted at our Southbury CT Adoption Center! He's a fabulous little guy who loves other dogs and is cat-friendly too! Poor little Peanut was rescued with a gigantic wound that he apparently sustained while trying to survive after being dumped. He's totally healed and just has a little scar under his arm now. Luckily, he has no emotional scarring - dogs are so much more resilient than people! Chiweenies are super fun little companions and Peanut is no exception, so we hope to find Peanut a family soon!
Please help us find Peanut's forever home by sharing his information on your facebook page or printing a flyer from his online posting and putting it at your office, Starbucks, local pet store, or vet's office! :) Your promotion works!!

Happy Adoption Update: Bradley!
|
Bradley was a dog CPR rescued from life at a puppy mill. Nate and Jen Dobas opened their hearts to this little adult dog who was learning everything for the first time. Bradley's dad Nate says that he was so scared and unsure when he arrived home, "but we knew all was good when after the second day we came downstairs to find that he had squeezed his way past the baby gate from the kitchen...and was lounging on the living room couch! Now, our little socialite does tricks, give kisses, loves to play and snuggle!" At the Valentine's Gala, we realized that another Shi Tzu rescued at the same time from the Puppy Mill raid, Chloe, was most likely Bradley's littermate - many exciting playdates lie ahead for the 2 adorable siblings!

CPR Orientation!
|
| Great turnout! |
February's Orientation, led by Lisa and Melissa, saw a great turnout of excited new volunteers! Volunteers learned about our adoption center, a little about the history of CPR and how we operate, and all the different ways help is needed in our mission to save dogs. There was even an adoption!
Once you complete orientation you're added to the volunteer calendar so that you're able to schedule times you can come walk dogs if that's one of the ways you'd like to help. March 18th at 2p.m. is the next orientation - we hope you'll join us! Please email makearns1@gmail.com if you can attend. |
Hey - What's with those spots?
|
The Black Tongue Debate: The Truth About Those Black Tongues
Courtesy of Vicki DeGruy, Kathy Welsh and Anna Wallace of the Chow Club Welfare Committee
Does the black spot on your Labrador's tongue mean he's really a Chow mix? That mixed breed puppy in the shelter with a partially black tongue -- is that a sure sign he's part Chow? The answer to both questions is: No!
The Chow Chow's blue-black tongue is one of the breed's most well known physical characteristics. It's also the most misunderstood. The Chow is one of the most ancient breeds and is the ancestor of many breeds of today. The origin of the Chow's black tongue is a mystery; we don't know how or why he came to have it.
We do know that the Chow is not the only breed with a blue-black tongue. The Chinese Shar-Pei shares this trait as well. A few other animals have black tongues, too: the giraffe, polar bear, and several breeds of cattle including the Jersey. We also know that blue-black spots on tongues are very common in dogs - more than 30 pure breeds are known to have members with spotted tongues. Spots on tongues are simply deposits of extra pigment, like birthmarks and freckles on people. Dogs often have spots of dark pigment on their skin, too, hiding under their coats. These spots can be large or small, many or few.
What if the dog looks like a Chow but has a completely pink or mostly pink tongue?
Knowledgeable Chowists agree that such dogs are not purebred Chows and might not have any Chow parentage at all. The Chow is a member of the spitz family, a large group of breeds that includes the Samoyed, Siberian Husky, Malamute, Akita, Shiba Inu, Pomeranian, Norwegian Elkhound, Keeshond, etc. They all share basic physical characteristics: a similar body structure, over-the-back tail carriage, upright triangular ears, and a dense offstanding coat. A Chow-looking dog with a pink tongue is more likely to be a mix of one of the other spitz-type breeds. Breeds known to have members with spotted tongues

Facebook fans take note: at the end of the month we'll be forced to have "timeline" on the CPR page - so we'll look a little different but still be chock full of all the fun and exciting news you've come to expect from us. LOL!

DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that dogs who often experience anxiety because of storms feel the static electricity in their fur? If traditional remedies like benadryl, Rescue Remedy or other supplements have not worked for you, you may want to check out the Thundershirt for your anxious pet - some of our adopters have given it rave reviews! Of course, none of us with CPR are trainers, and if your dog is experiencing any signs of anxiety it's always best to consult a professional trainer!
