How BCBS Michigan Maps ICD-10 Codes

How BCBS Michigan Maps ICD-10 Codes This Week's Challenge: A three-step process for resolving discrepancies between ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes has allowed Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBS-M) to complete its version of the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMs) and move closer toward ICD-10 compliance readiness. We wanted to see how BCBS-M maps ICD-10 codes.

What We Learned:"It’s one thing to actually incorporate the field length into your environment, but something totally different to say, ‘How are you going to use those ICD codes in your environment?’ How you use them truly makes a difference. You have to find every place within your applications that you are specifically referencing ICD codes and you have to remediate those areas. But its not just knowing where, you need to understand how those codes are associated with one another and that’s where mapping comes in. Within the four walls of BCBS-M, we use our codes differently based on the type of claim."
