About Our Shuttle Service:

"I have used BRS many times, and although they are a bit pricey in my books, with that said, they do a wonderful job at promoting fly fishing, giving back to the industry, and have always been very professional, courteous, and dependable."   - cgy (posted on Fly Fish Calgary)

"Nothing is getting any cheaper.. worth every penny IMO especially split 3 ways. I drive enough during the week. All I want to do is get on the water!

plus I like the candy's Michelle leaves with the receipt!"
   - Simpson (posted on Fly Fish Calgary)

"Werthers a way, there's a shuttle!!"   - cgy (posted on Fly Fish Calgary)

TUC Bow River Chapter reported that their 20th Annual 'Fall Splash' was a complete sellout!

An event like that takes many months of preparation. TUC staff members, along with a great many Bow River Chapter volunteers, pull together to create a successful event.

Here are a just a few of the volunteers and staff who were on hand early in the morning to make this all happen.

I was pleased to be able to provide a one day drift boat rental for the Silent Auction.

15. Fly Fishing Should Be Less Manly

Okay, so now that I have your attention, believe it or not, there's a very serious message to be shared about the state of the fly fishing world. The sport is too male-dominated. And it is suffering as a result.

Thankfully, there are indeed many great female icons of the sport like Joan Wulff, Patty Reilly, Wendy Gunn, Lori-Ann Murphy, Diana Rudolph, lately April Vokey and others.

The root of the problem is gear, or the lack thereof for women. Okay, before you send the hate mail, fly fishing gear manufacturers, I will acknowledge that many of you do offer good products for women.

14. Environmental/Conservation Concerns

Fracking & Pipelines

Although there are many water-related environmental issues bubbling away at any given time, it seems that, over the past few months, fracking and pipelines have been in the public eye almost every other day.

At their heart, these are water issues.

My Water's On Fire Tonight (The Fracking Song)
My Water's On Fire Tonight (The Fracking Song)

In the case of fracking: The huge volumes of water used in the process, the possible contamination of ground water by the chemicals injected into the ground, and the disturbance that fracking may be doing to the underground rock formations, thereby possibly allowing the chemical sludge to contaminate groundwater.

In the case of pipelines: Possible contamination of ground water and rivers in the event of a break. And in the case of the Gateway Project in particular, the possibility of an oil tanker spill in the waters off the West Coast of British Columbia.

Canada Environment commissioner Scott Vaughan's report from a few days ago, of 'gaps' in pipeline safety, certainly does not help the cause. After reading that, the folks in BC might be more opposed to pipelines than they were before. Could you blame them?

Unless Alberta wants to find its oil products blocked from distribution to foreign markets, the industry is going to have to prove in some meaningful way that their delivery system (in the case of pipelines) will not cause major damage to the waterways they cross, and in the case of fracking, that this process will not deprive future generations of clean, drinkable water.

Can they do it? Only time will tell.

In the meantime, here are a couple of recent articles which spell out some of the challenges that the oil industry is facing.

What Wyoming can teach us about water quality

By David Swann,

Calgary Herald

December 18, 2011

The Environmental Protection Agency's threeyear investigation into water quality problems in Wyoming created a stir in Alberta recently. Some industry people and journalists have dismissed the findings, but the conclusions are very credible and disturbing, according to water geo-chemistry expert Karlis Muehlenbachs at the University of Alberta.

Fracking Contamination 'Will Get Worse': Alberta Expert

Tighter regulations to protect groundwater needed, says U of Alberta geochemist.

By Andrew Nikiforuk,

Dec 19, 2011

TheTyee.ca

A well-known industry expert in tracking leaking methane from oil and gas wells says a groundbreaking U.S. federal study on hydraulic fracturing highlights not only an old and growing problem, but the need for tighter regulations in the shale gas industry.

"The shale gas boom combined with hydraulic fracking will cause wellbores to leak more often than run-of-the-mill conventional wells," says Karlis Muehlenbachs, a geochemist at the University of Alberta. "The problem is going to get worse, not better."
