Christine's Travels

Christine Harris VideoWatch former Creative Alliance Executive Director Christine Harris discuss Milwaukee's creative economy at the 173rd meeting of the National Council of the Arts, the advisory body to the National Endowment for the Arts.

Christine was also invited to present at Arts Alliance Illinois on June 28. Christine writes "again, our work is seen as seminal and we are credited with having more traction with creative economy work than any other community they knew of - which they attribute to our methodology for data collection and our commitment first and foremost to growing our creative industries rather than just measuring ourselves against others."

U.S. House Subcommittee Proposes $20 Million Cut to NEA Funding
A U.S. House of Representatives appropriations subcommittee began the funding cycle for Fiscal Year 2012 by approving legislation to fund the NEA at $135.2 million (a $20 million reduction). If enacted, it would be the deepest cut to the NEA in 16 years.

Please consider contacting your members of Congress to submit your perspective so they hear from the creative community (Americans for the Arts has an incredibly easy form, linked on our website below).

Arts Wisconsin Photo Archive
Arts Wisconsin is building its photo archives to help promote the arts in Wisconsin via their website and social media. They're looking for dynamic, vibrant and exciting images that show off the arts across the state; images reflecting the fabulous diversity and range of the performing, visual, and literary arts in Wisconsin -- kids making art, playing an instrument, singing, dancing; artists and performers at work; people of all ages enjoying the arts; arts facilities; inspirational moments in teaching or involvement in the arts, and more.

Please send up to three pictures of your work or from your organization and/or community, in a .jpg or .gif format, at least 278 x 193 pixels in size, to Anne Katz at akatz@artswisconsin.org (digital images only, please).  Please also send a brief caption to identify the image.

Submissions due Friday, July 22, 2011.

Member Spotlight: Jewish Museum Milwaukee

JMM TapestryJewish Museum Milwaukee, which opened its doors in April 2008, tells the story of the Jewish people in southeastern Wisconsin and celebrates the continuum of Jewish heritage and culture, while teaching the importance of mutual tolerance and respect among people of all faiths and cultures. The Museum is located in the Helfaer Community Service Building at 1360 Prospect Avenue, designed by Edward Durrell Stone. Just inside is the Museum's major artifact, a one-of-a-kind, 14-by-19-foot tapestry designed by Marc Chagall (shown here).

The Museum's creative efforts in the Greater Milwaukee area began with the collection of artifacts and creation of exhibits, videos and other interactive features that make up the content of the Museum.
