============================

My family left on Tuesday for about 13 days away on a retreat in our former home area and to visit family. As much as I like to joke that this is a vacation time for me, too, I have a schedule of things to do around the new house to prepare the outside of it (the former owner was elderly and let it go to pot (one of the reasons that we were able to buy it cheaply) plus do my work plus work on a new website or two.

Well, at least I won't have the Yankees to distract me. While they're gone.

Anyway, after going to the gym on Saturday morning, I shopped at a local farmer's market,  worked around the house and then spent time writing, something that I enjoy doing. I've shifted from my array of job search products and recipe guides to things that are more personal (and harder to get out of me). I guess that's why I chose the particular quote this week.

If you don't know of Eric Hoffer, he was a very popular author in the early 1960's. Referred to as "the longshoreman philosopher," Hoffer was blind at birth and miraculous gained his site as a teen. He went on to write some amazing books including, "The True Believer,"  an amazing piece of non-fiction about mass movements in the 20th century that is as true today as it was then.

The Job Market: October 2011

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, and his views on the job market.

"I have been blogging about the job market in the US and around the world since August 2001."

What I write is not designed to be political or critical; it is observations and my sense of where we are and where we are going.

--------------------------------------------

I find the government jobs report and how it is covered in the press hysterically funny.

Rejoice!

Respecting Recruiters Part 2

Earlier this year I wrote an article called "Respecting Recruiters."

It began with me saying that I strive for excellence, not perfection. No matter what I do, there will be people who will criticize and complain that I am incompetent because I have failed to find work for them, even though they are not paying me to find work for them (employers are paying me to find new employees for them) and even though I try to communicate with everyone with advice, tips, and information

Can You Help Me?

Being artistic is not one of my strong suits so I thought I would ask if one of you might design a logo for The Big Game Hunter that might include a spear in the design. If yours is selected, I will give you a PDF of 20 of my recipe guides to cooking in different styles (yes, I have written cookbooks, too)--crockpot and pressure cooking, salad dressings and pasta sauces, Mexican food and low card guides.

If you have a design, email it to TheBigGameHunter@gmail.com

What often stands between a job hunter and getting a job is the knowledge of the skill of interviewing.

I describe it that way because it is an acquired skill, just like the ones you have to do your job, ride a bike, swim or drive a car--you weren't good at those at the beginning and needed to learn what to do. Same with interviewing.

I like my various job search guides but if you would rather learn from someone else, here are a number of guides you can order to improve your interview skills.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can now read my first book, "Get Yourself Hired NOW! The Big Game Hunter's Guide to Head Hunting Your Next Job and Every Job After That!" for free at my website, www.GetYourselfHiredNOW.com. It is a basic book about job hunting.

Once you reach the site, enter it and you'll find the link (if you want to share the links with friends, colleagues or a networking group you are a part of, suggest that they enter their email address at the first screen so that they can receive a subscription to this ezine and 60 days of job search tips free.

The same is also true of two of my brief guides,, "No B.S. Questions You Should Ask on Any Interview," and "Survive a Layoff Like a Pro." Both are also available to be read there, too.

                                            =================================

Do you need some advice about an element of your job search?

I recently introduced a new level of coaching called "Cup of Coffee." 15 minutes of time to discuss what you want for $125 and you'll receive two PDF's of my books, too.
