August/2011

Mood swings, anxiety, depression, hot flashes, bloating and low libido... sound familiar? PMS and menopausal symptoms have become part of our culture. Why is this? Why are so many women affected with these issues? It really boils down to hormonal imbalances. The key is figuring out what is causing these hormonal imbalances.  Read on to find out more...

Why are changes in mood associated with female hormone imbalance?
Est Prog Molecule
Your Body's Hormones Are Powerful Anti-Depressants.
Did you know that estrogen and progesterone are powerful anti-depressants?  When women have healthy hormone levels they feel good, not only physically, but mentally too.  This is because the levels of your happy mood, anti-anxiety and relaxation brain chemicals are directly related to your levels of estrogen and progesterone.  For example; did you know that estrogen functions as an MAO inhibitor?  MAO inhibitors are a class of anti-depressants.  Progesterone has also been widely studied and recognized as a powerful anti-anxiety hormone.  Before taking an anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medication, consider looking into your hormones.  Make sure you ask someone qualified to comment on Natural or Functional Medicine treatment.

Blood sugar imbalances - One of the most common causes of female hormone imbalance.
Blood Sugar
Eat good and feel great!
Eating too many carbs is not only bad for your waistline, it can also throw off your hormones.  In the graph above you can see the impact a high carb meal has on your blood sugar.  The low point of the curve is very stressful hormonally.  You body has to produce a stress hormone called cortisol to bring you out of this blood sugar low.  While the body is preoccupied making cortisol sex hormone production is put on hold, so levels of estrogen and progesterone are negatively effected.  The occasional carb bing wont cause this, but prolonged high carb dieting will.  If you think your carb consumption is OK, I would caution you that there is a high amount of variability as to how many carbs someone can tolerate.  If you are experiencing female hormone symptoms, you may want to look into your carb intake.  People can each as much veggies as they want, but potatoes, rice, breads, cereals, fruit juices can cause problems.  This variability in ones carb tolerance is a concept called "heterogeneity in insulin sensitivity".

Toxins - Another major contributor to female hormone imbalance.

        Water Pollution

Toxins - Everywhere but often overlooked.
Toxins are one of the most prevalent factors effecting your health.  Did you know that many toxins actually function as estrogen in  your body?  Click here to view recent study showing environmental toxins disrupt puberty in children because of the hormonal effects they have, Study shows toxins effect hormones and puberty.  Toxins also directly effect your thyroid function.  Many thyroid problems go unresolved until a toxicity problem is addressed.  In addition to all this, toxins have also be correlated with cancer of the brain, stomach and breast as well as other bodily tissues.  The first step in addressing toxicity is avoiding exposure.  Limit your intake of conventionally raised produce and meat and focus on consuming organic foods.  Investing in a water filter is another good idea.  Choosing household cleaners that are bio-degradable and environmentally friendly will also help you avoid another common source of toxic exposure.

So how do I balance my hormones?!

Pyramid What my clinical experience has taught me.
OK ladies, here is something that will save you much time and money in pursuing hormonal balance.  Hormones do not go out of balance for no reason, and because of this treating hormones is the last thing you should do.  I have seen numerous female patients after they have bounced from doctor to doctor trying hormone creams and pills and finding little help to finally help them uncover that their hormones were out of balance because of some other cause.  This is why I have designed the Performance Pyramid.  It is the most logical sequence of procedures to address someones health ailments.  Please notice that hormone balancing is the last thing we treat directly.  This is because once you address the other foundational issues, most hormonal problems take care of themselves.
