Greetings from Olsson Associates
With summer setting in, Olsson employees are staying busy with an abundance of innovative projects that we are anxious to share with you.
In recent years, Olsson has begun offering its engineering services for our oil and gas clients. One example is the current process of grading, erosion control plans, and plans for diverting stormwater run-on for hundreds of well pads throughout Colorado and western North Dakota.
To combat inadequate drainage facilities, Jefferson County and the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District retained Olsson to design an improved detention basin and outlet structure located adjacent to Olsson's Golden office. Since this project's completion, the site has already established prominent vegetative growth.
Steve Ingracia, our technology leader, has spearheaded the effort to file for U.S. patent protection of a new Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) central power solution. This system enables the entire FTTH system to be powered from a central location, which eliminates the need for batteries and the burden of long-term maintenance hassles.
As always, if you have questions or would like more information on anything in this e-newsletter or on our services, please don't hesitate to give me a call. |
Paying it Forward: Engineering Services for Our Oil and Gas Clients
By Mike Yost, PE, LEED AP
Over many years, our clients have become familiar with Olsson's environmental compliance services regarding air modeling, soil sampling, permitting, and stormwater inspections. However, in recent years, Olsson has brought its 55-year history of engineering to the oil and gas industry. Using quality engineering services up front on an oil and gas project can help build local community trust, improve production processes, and save money in the long run. Olsson brings engineering experience to well pad sites; gas processing, transportation, and storage facilities; water impoundments; and solid-waste landfills.
For each oil and gas application, Olsson can provide high-quality surveying, geotechnical engineering, grading and drainage design, stormwater management plans, and best management practices (BMP) for erosion control. Olsson also can provide access road, bridge design, and other specialty services.

Featured Project: McIntyre Outfall for Swamp Angel Detention Basin | Jefferson County, Colorado
Improving drainage facilities... near our own backyard!
Concerns about inadequate drainage facilities in the Fairmount area prompted Jefferson County and the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District to retain Olsson Associates to design an improved detention basin and outlet structure located adjacent to Olsson's Golden office. This project was recently completed and has already established significant vegetative growth.
The area has many irrigation facilities, such as ditches and canals, built during the 1800s to block or intercept stormwater from its natural drainage path.
The area's rapid growth, coupled with a lack of drainage facilities, caused concerns among county staff, property owners, and developers.

New System for Powering Fiber to the Home
By Steve Ingracia, Technology Leader
Olsson Associates has filed for U.S. patent protection for a new Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) central power solution that we are calling "CPR Central Power." This system allows the entire FTTH system to be powered from a central location and eliminates the need for batteries and the long-term maintenance hassles that battery replacement poses to telecom companies.
CPR Central Power is a solution for powering FTTH Optical Network Terminals (ONT) directly from a central office, or from power distribution huts, rather than powering from the home. This approach eliminates the need for local batteries at each ONT and also provides for much longer-term power backup times. As many ONT and UPS manufacturers are now recommending that batteries be moved inside the home to extend life, the CPR solution also acts to keep your entire infrastructure external to the home, simplifying both contractor installation and future maintenance.

News From Joplin
All Olsson employees and their immediate family members in Joplin, Missouri, are safe following the tornado that hit the city May 22. Olsson Associates made a donation to Convoy of Hope, a community outreach and disaster-recovery nonprofit based in Springfield. Employees in our Kansas and Missouri offices donated blood, and our employees put together a delivery of nonperishable items for storm survivors in Joplin. We are thankful our employees are safe, and our thoughts remain with those in Joplin. |
