                ===================

We have been continuing the joyous times that have been "The Good Bye Tour" prior to our departure for Asheville, NC on June 21. Last weekend, we visited friends on the North Fork of Long Island. Tuesday, I left the men's group I was a member of for the five plus years that we lived in Pennsylvania; Thursday, while my wife and son were having dinner with a friend near home, I dined with my friend, Alex, in New York City getting caught up after not seeing one another for months.

This weekend, both my wife and son knew to stay away while I was "studying for a test. (that's how I refer to prepping for a colonoscopy)." And now that it is done, I have been asked by my doctor to do a modified fast until next Monday to see if he can figure out what might be causing the rash I have. GASP! A week without eating!

Please be kind to me while I am going through this!

The Job Market: June, 2011

When the job market is poor, job hunters have a choice when they receive an offer from a new employer-- take it or leave it. After all, employers have many extremely capable people to choose from and feel little need to negotiate. "I have been blogging about the job market in the US and around the world since August 2001."

--------------------------------------------

Last month, in the midst of the euphoria about a strong employment report, I pointed out a big discrepancy between the government report and the ADP report.

I wrote:

To me, sitting in the trenches of recruiting and hiring, despite the rejoicing going on, hiring still feels somewhat muted.

Companies are only hiring people with exceptional skills and backgrounds.

I am not seeing or hearing many instances of long term unemployed finding work yet.

Interviewing is still taking a long time before hiring occurs (but hiring is occurring). Wages are not increasing. The same salaries for jobs are being paid as were many years ago; only the government can say $4 gasoline and higher food prices does not mean inflation is occurring.

Without wages increasing many will remain will continue to drown under their financial responsibilities despite finding work.
Job training continues to be outsourced to employees. Few companies are paying for their employees to receive additional skills and training. For you to advance or to improve your circumstances, you are often required to take additional training to even qualify . . . and expected to pay for that training, too.

Since there is a significant disconnect between what the government is reporting for the new hires and what ADP is and what I am sensing, I am going with my own take which is that job growth remains somewhat modest except in manufacturing, retail and entry level (recent grad) hiring.
