NOW’S THE TIME TO FOCUS ON SKIN CANCER PREVENTION
AND SUN SAFETY
May is National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, so it’s a good time to plan on getting your skin checked for pre-cancers or potential cancers if you have not done so already this year. The fact is, skin cancer is highly treatable if caught early, but it can be deadly or disfiguring if left undetected. That’s why early detection and daily sun safety measures are so essential for all to practice.  
In the short video below, Dr. Derick explains how to watch for suspicious spots on your skin using the ABCDE’s of Melanoma as your guide:  

With sunnier days upon us, now is the ideal opportunity to also check your own sun safety routine to be sure you are properly protected from the sun’s harmful rays. Please watch this video below to learn more about Dr. Derick’s daily sun protection tips:  

Dr. Derick reminds everyone that there is no such thing as a “safe” tan, (other than a spray-on tan). Indoor and outdoor tanning should be fully avoided, in light of the associated significant risks of developing melanoma. Please view this one-minute video to learn about saying “NO” to Melanoma:

On Tuesday, May 17 on the WGN Chicago 11:00 Midday News, Dr. Derick will appear as a guest expert to address skin cancer prevention and sun safety for all ages and skin types. Her segment will air at around 11:10 am. We hope you’ll tune in if you can!

DR. DERICK PROVIDED FREE SKIN CANCER SCREENINGS AT ADVOCATE GOOD SHEPHERD HOSPITAL COMMUNITY EVENT
On Melanoma Monday (May 2, 2011), Dr. Amy Derick volunteered at the free Skin Cancer Screening Luau for the public at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, where she identified several skin cancers. She is shown with a patient and Julie Mayer, Director of Community Outreach & Government Relations, Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital.
