"You buy furniture.  You tell yourself, this is the last sofa I will ever need in my life.  Buy the sofa, then for a couple years you're satisfied that no matter what goes wrong, at least you've got your sofa issue handled.  Then the right set of dishes.  Then the perfect bed.  The drapes.  The rug.  Then you're trapped in your lovely nest, and the things you used to own, now they own you."

~~Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club, Chapter 5

This weekend, we continued what we refer to as "The Farewell Tour" of friends and family as we prepare to move in June. My wife taught a course at The Kadampa Meditation Center, my son stayed overnight with a friend he has made here, and I joined an old friend for a gathering he does annually at his home in New York.

Charles has invited me for years but for one reason or another, I have never been able to attend until this year when I received an invitation to his home and work space hidden away in Long Island City.

Like the original lofts in Soho, Charles and his wife took an old building and turned it into a beautiful home that doubles as a cloud-based computing environment for clients.

The food was wonderful. Charles prepared wonderful spare ribs, pulled pork and BBQ chicken for the occasion. Truly a wonderful feast for the palate and wonderful conversation with others.

Getting Ready for the Next Downdraft and Your Next Job Search

In August, 2001, I started writing about about the job market in the first issue of this ezine; the timing was extraordinary because two weeks later, I was able to chronicle the affects of the attack on the World Trade Center, Pentagon on the job market.

What we in America commonly call 9/11 affected job hunters and recruiters alike. With firms not hiring and laying off in large numbers, all of us in recruiting were on a huge hamster wheel of speaking with people we could do little to help. Like theirs, my income slid dramatically, falling to 15% of what it previously was.

FAQs on Thank You Letters

Good recruiters tell jobseekers to send a thank you note after an interview. To address the most frequently asked questions on how and what to send in a thank you note, here are some thoughts:

Won't the employer think that I am desperate if I send a thank-you letter?

Of course not.

I have my own products available on the subject (available on Amazon, BN.com, Scribd.com and my own websites) but in case you would prefer someone else's, David Perry and Kevin Donlin have written, "Guerrilla LinkedIn Makeover" to help you be found by recruiters and hiring employers on LinkedIn.
