With the warm weather we want to spend more time near the water and of course we want our furry friends to come along and join in the fun. There are lots of great things you can get to help have fun in the water.
If your dog loves to swim and goes out on the boat with you a great item to invest in would be a life jacket. They come in many sizes, all you need to know is the length of your dog from his shoulders to the base of their tail. To go with this you can get doggles for their eyes to help them protect their eyes. If while they are swimming they like to fetch then there are great toys from West Paw that are bright colors and shaped like a stick and they float.
Other great toys are frisbees from Canine Hardware, the makers of Chuck-It, and Planet Dog. Planet Dog even makes one that glows in the dark for night time fun. Great if your at the beach to play catch with your best friend on those summer nights.
If your pup likes soft toys then a great toy could be the floatable toys from Go Dog in the shape of sharks and seahorses.
Whatever you do with your dog remember to be safe and if your going to be out in the sun for extended periods of time use sun lotion to protect their bare areas as well. Also make sure to have plenty of water available for when they get thirsty, but be careful not to let them gulp it down but drink slowly and even, so not to twist their stomach.
If they do seem to be overheated, do not just splash water on them because this could shock their system and make it worse. Wetting their coat when overheated can also mat the hair down and make it harder for them to cool off locking the heat in. Get them to a cool shaded area and give them some water. Perhaps wet a towel and place it on their paws or let them lay on it.
