Pools open

 

Valley Aquatic, Kennedy providing open swim

Summer means pool season, and open swim gets in full swing this weekend at both Valley Aquatic Center, 4381 W. 18th St., and Kennedy Pool, 23rd Street and Kennedy Lane.

 

Valley Aquatic Center offers open swim Friday, June 3 from 4 to 7:45 p.m. Then starting June 4, Valley Aquatic will offer open swim Tuesdays through Sundays from 1 to 7:45 p.m.

 

Kennedy Pool opens June 4 and will offer open swim Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 7:45 p.m., and Tuesdays through Fridays from 1 to 3:45 p.m.

 

 

Recreation Events

 

Water Sports for youth

Children ages 8 to 15 are invited to come play water hockey, water polo, sharks and minnows and Marco Polo just to name a few of the super fun games that will be played every day during the Water Sports program, offered 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays through Fridays June 11 through July 22 at the Valley Aquatic Center, 4381 W. 18th St. Fees are $30 or $20 with City resident credit.

 

Aqua Zumba now to five days a week

Hot weather and hot Latin rhythms combine in the pool for Aqua Zumba, a program so popular it has been expanded to five days a week for summer. Aqua Zumba is led by two of Yuma's finest and funniest instructors, Misty Smith from KTTI and Cindy Fram. Join them for a Zumba party in the pool 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. Mondays through Fridays from June 1 through July 29. Drop-in fee is $4 per class.

 

Destination Yuma - a field trip series

Destination Yuma makes a children's trip around the home town seem like a vacation. Children 7 to 12 years old are invited to this series of field trips happening 1 to 4:45 p.m. June 13-16, with Clymer Recreation Center on Orange Avenue serving as home port (pickup/drop-off spot). Visits to the Camel farm and the fire station are exciting. See how water is taken from the Colorado River and sent to your house. Go out to the fields and learn about watermelon crop production. This is a field trip that will stay in your hearts the rest of your lives. See the real Yuma and enjoy our home town. Parents must register their children; fees are as low as $41 for this program. Adult Full-Court Basketball League

Men - think you're in shape enough to join a full-court basketball league? It will take place at 6:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, June 6 through July 22, at Yuma High School. Fees are $335 per team; $10 per player. The format is round-robin play with a separate A/B playoff.  League play starts soon so sign up with Parks and Recreation today.

 

Discover Scuba

Come to Discover Scuba 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 18 at Kennedy Pool. Register now at the City of Yuma Parks and Recreation Department for as low as $10 for city residents. Designed for ages 12 and up, Discover Scuba is an introductory course to the underwater world. This program is for experienced swimmers. The certified SCUBA Instructors will expose you to the basics of scuba diving and will take you step by step in preparation for your underwater experience. A physical release from a physician is required prior to the class.

 

Summer Softball season - sign up now

Summer is softball season, and registration is under way now for men's, women's and co-rec leagues that start play at various City fields on June 20. Men's and Women's divisions will play Monday through Thursday evenings and co-rec will be played on Friday and Saturday evenings. Team entries are limited, so register now with Parks and Rec.

 

Teen Intermediate Basketball League

Teens may register now through June 1 for an intermediate full-court basketball league that will begin with a required clinic held Monday, June 13, from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Yuma Civic Center, 1440 W. Desert Hills Drive. Any boy or girl who will be entering grades 7,8 or 9 is eligible to participate; registration fee is $30. All participants must attend the June 13 clinics. This will be a summer of fun and basketball all played inside the air-conditioned Yuma Civic Center.

 

Private kayak trips

If you are interested in enjoying the Colorado River and can get a group of 10 together, the City of Yuma Parks and Recreation Department offers private kayak trips for you and your party for fees as low as $18 per person. Call 928-373-5243 today, to reserve your own private trip down the river.

 

Senior/Adult Activities at North End Community Center

The North End Community Center, 160 E. 1st St., offers daily programs for adults and seniors.  Shoot some pool or join in on one of the many classes they offer, such as arts and crafts.  Classes are taught by experienced Parks and Recreation instructors. Stop in any time to see what's happening and join in the fun: The office hours at the North End Community Center are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursdays. For more information please call 928-373-5245 or 928-373-5243.  Registration for any of their programs can be taken at the North End Center, or the main Parks and Recreation office on the first floor of City Hall.

 

Basic Cheerleading

This class is an introduction for ages 6-12 to cheerleading and the concept of fitness. Basic cheerleading aims to enhance the development of self-esteem and unique physical abilities by providing personal attention and instruction in the fundamentals of cheerleading. This program will be held in four sessions between June 13 and Aug. 4; Session I runs June 13-23. Program will be held 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Monday through Thursday at the Yuma Civic Center, 1440 W. Desert Hills Drive. Fees apply and registration is required; call or visit Parks and Recreation for more information.

 

Tiny Tumblers

Participants, ages 3-5, will receive instruction in basic tumbling and balance techniques at this class, offered 8:15 to 9:45 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays in four sessions between June 13 and Aug. 4 at the Yuma Civic Center, 1440 W. Desrt hills Drive. The motivation and support participants receive from instructors will encourage them to be their very best. Participants must be toilet trained. Fees apply and registration is required; call or visit Parks and Recreation for more information

 

 

Events at the Historic Yuma Theatre, Yuma Art Center and Yuma Civic Center/ Ray Kroc Complex

 

NextGen's Movie and a Beer

On Friday, June 3, the NexGen Leadership Council presents "Movie and a Beer" night at the Historic Yuma Theatre. Doors open at 6 p.m.; film starts at 7 p.m. Meet young local professionals in a relaxed atmosphere and see the movie "Dazed and Confused" on the big screen. Set during the last day of school at a high school in a small town in Texas in 1976, "Dazed and Confused" follows several groups of people from the town as they go through things that could have only happened in the 70s. Plus it features a soundtrack full of favorites from the heyday of "Classic Rock." There is no admission fee for this event (but you do need to be old enough to see an R-rated movie).

 

 

Fine Arts holding eclectic BeerFest

The Yuma Fine Arts Association offers the second annual BeerFest with doors opening at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 4 at the Yuma Art Center, 254 S. Main St.Proceeds support Yuma Fine Arts programs and events. Enjoy eclectic and quality beer tasting or full beer by the glass (and keep the glass). Food is included in the price of your ticket, which costs $30. If you want to hang out without sampling beer, food tickets are $12. Bring your friends; a table of 10 costs only $300. Indoor Swap Meet

The first of this summer season's Indoor Swap Meets comes to the Yuma Civic Center, 1440 W. Desert Hills Drive, on June 11. Booth spaces are still available - one 10-foot by 10-foot booth space costs just $20; call 373-5040 to reserve yours today. Shoppers, the bargains start 7 a.m. June 11 at the Civic Center, with the swap meet going on until 1 p.m. Can't make that first one? Other indoor swap meets are planned for the Civic Center on July 9 and Aug. 6.

 

 

Take Pride In Yuma

There were 52 cases of graffiti abated the week of May 25-31. This compares with 75 cases the previous week.

 

Graffiti cleanup and vandalism currently costs the Yuma taxpayers over $200,000 per year. Please help us reduce vandalism by reporting incidences of crime to 78-Crime (782-7463) and graffiti to the Graffiti Busters hot line, 329-2828. If you witness a crime in progress, call 911.
