Creative Alliance Milwaukee Update

June 23, 2011

Greetings!

Thanks to the Business Journal for publishing another story on Creativity Works Here, helping us spread the word about the exciting developments in Grand Avenue. If you haven't been through the Mall lately, it's worth taking a trip and visiting Milwaukee Public Theatre, Spreenkler Creative and Talent Labs, VETransfer, Flipeleven and more.

Christine Harris, our consulting advisor, has been busy traveling this week for two national conferences where she was asked to speak about the creative industries in the Milwaukee region. Catch the highlights below.

Make sure you register for our next networking event on July 20. It's cheap, got great food and drinks, and most importantly, will be full of the people you want to get connected with! Join us!

We also wanted to apologize to our member, Eric Oxendorf, for misspelling his name in the last newsletter.

Cheers,

AFTA Conference Recap

By Christine Harris, consulting advisor for Creative Alliance Milwaukee

AFTA Photo

As I have done for many years (first for United Arts Funds, and now for Urban Arts Federations), I attended the AFTA conference this year. You may recall that the Cultural Alliance hosted the 2006 national AFTA conference in Milwaukee. This year, I had the privilege of being part of four presentations all related to our Creativity Works! project. About 1,000 arts colleagues from around North America gathered to discuss what is happening in the arts today and exploring the future opportunities. It was a great opportunity to link up with colleagues, meet new friends and find out how others are navigating their worlds.

First, I presented to the State Arts Agency Network. They represent state-wide arts support agencies. Many of them were dealing with how to work with the 'creative economy'. Some were enthusiastic about it and others were concerned that focus and support of nonprofit arts would get lost in this work. It is clear that this development needs to be a win/win and not an either/or.

Second, I was on a panel in a general session: Cultural Affairs to Creative Affairs. Panelists other than myself are in the photo. From the left - Gary Steuer, Chief Cultural Officer, Office of Arts/Culture and the Creative Economy, Philadelphia, PA; Elaine Mariner, Director, Colorado Creative Industries (their former Colorado Arts Board), Denver, CO; Helena Fruscio, Executive Director, Berkshire Creative, Pittsfield, MA; moderator Marc Goldring, Associate Principal, WolfBrown, Brookline, MA. We presented to a completely packed room.

Nurturing This City's Start-Up Culture

Last week, J.B. Kropp of the Brandery in Cincinnati visited Milwaukee as a guest of the Greater Milwaukee Committee. "As a first-time visitor to Milwaukee, I came away impressed about several aspects the city and surrounding area have to offer," Kropp said. "I left knowing that Milwaukee has a great opportunity to capitalize on a healthy entrepreneurial community that can be the foundation for a vibrant landscape of technology start-ups and that can position the city and surrounding area as an attractive hub for young, entrepreneurial-minded talent."
