This weekend, I spent time with my son in New York City while my wife did charitable work. We drove to New York and visited a Mac store, had lunch and then went to The Liberty Science Center in Jersey City.

We saw a movie at their IMAX theater about chasing tornadoes (Tornado Alley) and explored exhibits.

It is fun for me noticing the changes in him as he grows up (he's 10 now) and watching him in the Mac store looking at hardware, loving the vibe of the place (as did I) was fun for me.

Then, Mother's Day was a wonderful gathering of my wife's family and sharing stories and getting caught up . . . only 6 more weeks before our big move!

The Job Market: May 2011

I was reminded of something recently when reading a local newspaper. The article I read offered advice to job hunters and said something very profound. To paraphrase, the person interviewed commented that our area had more college graduates than positions available for grads. The good news about hiring continues to be obvious to the experts. Companies are continuing to hire.

Private sector hiring is picking up steam with more than 260000 new jobs being created in the private sector (in many moths, the government adds jobs that they believe were created but cannot prove were created; I have not found the number yet in the report that were added) and government cuts continue (20,000 more jobs cut).

Cx5=PL: What Every Employer Assesses for When They Hire

What does a company want to find out about you when they interview you? What are they trying to find out when they evaluate and assess you?

In most cases, hiring staff or temporary workers starts out with a job description. Someone sat down and consciously thought of what skills and experience they needed on their staff. As such, most firms hopefully start off by assessing for competence (I say "hopefully" because so many people report that they work with incompetent colleagues). Hopefully an employer has developed a series of questions that help them evaluate and assess skills competency for the skills that are needed.
