Outdoor Recreation
Christmas Canoe Trip
Deadline is 1 p.m. this Friday to register for the Christmas canoe trip happening 4 p.m. Dec. 18 at Gateway Park. Canoeing down the Colorado River in a decorated canoe and enjoying the awe of the Arizona holiday sunset will give to you a wonderful Christmas gift. The trip will be capped off with a bonfire, hot chocolate and delicious s'mores. Dress warm: 'tis the season of winter. Register at the Yuma Parks and Recreation office for $20.

Holiday Workshop
The season of giving is upon us and on Dec. 18, a Holiday Workshop will be set up at Clymer Recreation Center, 553 S. Orange Ave. How amazing will it be to receive a gift from your toddler made with love and the holiday spirit of giving? Craft projects will be made, holiday movies will be shown, and delicious goodies will be made (and eaten). Parents, register your children ages 3 to 5 at the City of Yuma Parks and Recreation office for $18, or $11 with City resident credit.
Youth Sports
Junior Golf Clinics
It takes a very special approach to create an effective, fun, and valuable lesson for kids in golf. Golf Professional Instructor Richard Walton and the staff of Desert Hills Golf Course have scheduled a Junior Golf Clinic from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Dec. 27-28. This clinic will emphasize the fundaments of golf, safety and fun. Register at Desert Hills Golf Course for $20 per participant. For more information, call 373-5220.
Adult Sports
Winter Classic Softball Tournament
The 2011 Winter Classic Men's 12-inch and Women's 11-inch softball tournament is scheduled for Jan. 15-16. Space is limited so register your team soon: Team entry fee is $235 plus the yearly $23 ASA fee. Entries must be received on or before Jan. 6. Umpire Clinic
Don't get called out! The ASA Umpires Clinic will be March 5, 2011 from 9 am to 5 pm at the North End Community Center, 160 E. 1st St. All current City of Yuma Parks and Recreation umpires must attend. This also is a great opportunity for anyone interested in becoming an ASA umpire. Test and books will be available in January at the City of Yuma Parks and Recreation. Senior Programs
Senior Billiards
At the North End Community Center, 180 E. 1st St., there are three billiard tables waiting for you from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Try it a couple times for a drop-in fee of only $2 per day or save some money by purchasing a monthly or season pass. For additional information, please call us at 928-373-5245.
Senior Tennis
Senior Tennis is played from 9 a.m. to noon every Tuesday and Thursday at the newly remodeled Desert Sun Tennis Courts located next to Caballeros Park and the Yuma Water Tower. The season is under way, but there is still space available for interested participants. Experienced or newly beginning players are welcome; an instructor is on site to assist if you would like some tips on how to improve your game. Silversmith Artwork
The silversmith artwork program will have you learn to construct jewelry as you work side by side with the friendly staff of the North End Community Center, 160 E. 1st St. The silversmith program is a multilevel course that promotes beginners and highlights the experienced. Class is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Friday at the North End Community Center (no classes Dec. 24 & 31). Fee is $10 per person. This is a drop-in program and advance registration is not mandatory. There is a fee for supplies and tools that will be given to you the first day you attend. Porcelain China Paint
China Painting is a keepsake program that produces works of art which will last a lifetime. Class is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Tuesday at the Yuma Readiness and Community Center, on the corner of Araby Road and 24th Street. Try it out for the fee of $2 a day or $51 a season for nonresidents or for just $34 a season for City residents. Call 373-5239 or 373-5243 for more information. EVENTS AT THE HISTORIC YUMA THEATRE AND YUMA ART CENTER
Desert Pointe Productions presents "Amahl and the Night Visitors" Dec. 16-18. This opera, sang in English, is a wondrous Christmas tale. Amahl, a young shepherd, and his mother are visited by the three wise men at their humble home. The three wise men seek the Christ child and Amahl and his mother, through their hospitality, learn the true meaning of giving. For tickets or more information, contact the Yuma Art Center at 373-5202. Show is at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 16 and 17; and on Saturday, Dec. 18 matinee is at 1 p.m. and the evening show is at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for all seats.
