Here is the latest information on the 24-hour clean-up effort around the Ward.
After putting in 16 hour days Streets and Sanitation crews have removed snow from most of the 370 alleys in the Ward...only 30 alleys are left to clear.
As of today, all side streets have been plowed and are passable. At this hour, the Ward Yard crews are still plowing and have a salt spreader working intersections in the ward.
If you are utilizing a private plow, please make sure not to plow- in your neighbors. Our office has received several complaints about private services blocking dozens of garages and lots.
As a result, private contractors have hampered the ability of people to use their garages and navigate safely at intersections. Private plow operators may be ticketed if they are caught plowing in residences, blocking garages or compromising the sightlines at traffic intersections.
Alleys are being cleared with high lifts since plows cannot be used in alleys. The goal is to remove snow when possible and not just quickly pile it on the other side of the street.
Streets and Sanitation crews were tasked with clearing crosswalks. During this snowstorm, as in all other emergencies, "vitals", as they are called, are cleared first and include police stations, fire stations, senior centers and schools.
Garbage pickup resumed Monday. Garbage trucks are digging to get through some of the snow, but workers have been slowed down by snow piled on garbage cans. You can help the workers by making sure your cans are clear of snow. I have been in constant contact with the Streets and Sanitation Commissioner throughout the last few days and today we are told that garbage pickup, rather than recycling, is the main focus. This is because materials in garbage carts are more likely to attract rats.
After speaking with the Dept. of Revenue, they agree that it is not feasible to enforce the 2 inch snow ban. However, ALL parking meters are still being enforced, so please be aware of where you park. Also, be advised that you are asked to park as close to the curb as possible.
My office will continue prioritizing all snow related issues just as we did during the height of the blizzard. So far we have handled over 1,000 calls and emails from residents and businesses.
When 311 operators were deluged the calls came to the Ward office and we were able to successfully assist life threatening situations in a timely manner.
A snow emergency like this one presents many challenges. It is our goal to fairly and equitably service each one of you as I mentioned the other night on Fox TV.
I want to thank each one of your for your cooperation and patience during the blizzard and it's aftermath.
