momstown Whitby-Ajax Newsletter | February 2011 | |
January seems to have passed us by in the blink of an eye. I guess that's what happens when you are having fun... and that's exactly what the Moms and tots of momstown Whitby-Ajax have been doing a lot of this month. Between the playgroups, meeting Lionel from Boston Pizza, enjoying the winter wonderland... There's been a lot going on! It's safe to say we're beating the winter blues.
February has a lot in store. One being the pending arrival of my little bundle. My husband, daughter and I couldn't be more excited. We also have many great fun-themed events planned based around Valentine's Day and our February theme - My Body, along with Moms Nights Out, etc.
If you haven't had a chance to check out our upcoming calendar, please head over and do so. We started planning out a lot of great events heading well into the the beginning of Summer, so be sure to get on there and sign-up!
We hope to see you all out and about around the neighbourhood soon!
Your momstown mama,
Nicole |

What's Cooking?

Instant Chicken & White Bean Stew
Have some leftover chicken? Try this QUICK & yummy recipe!
Ingredients
1 onion, diced 2 cloves of garlic 2 tsp olive oil 2 cup reduced sodium vegetable or chicken broth 2 medium zucchinis, halved lengthwise and thinly sliced 1 can cannellini beans, rinsed and drained 1/8 tsp ground black pepper 1 1/2 cup cooked diced chicken (or firm tofu) 2 tbsp prepared pesto
Directions
In a non-stick skillet over medium heat, cook the onion and garlic in the oil until soft. Add the broth, zucchini, beans and pepper. Heat just to boiling. Boil for 2 minutes. Add the chicken, return to boiling and remove from heat. Add the pesto. Let stand for 2 to 3 minutes to blend the flavours. Voila!
NOTES: I thought this recipe sounded good but wasn't sure that it wouldn't be too bland. When I made this, I found I only needed 1 med-large zucchini. Also, I used chicken that had been left over from last time I made quesadillas so it had taco flavouring on it which I have to say didn't hurt the recipe at all. In the end it was really yummy and filling!

New Babes on the Block

A little warm welcome to our newest babies on the momstown block! (No new babes this month. Hopefully February will bring on some new bundles!) |
Family Craft Corner (as featured on momstown arts & crafts)
V is for Valentine
V is for Valentine's Day! Never too early to reinforce the letters of the alphabet!
Supplies
Construction Paper
Glue Red food colouring Paper hearts, heart shapes, red sequins - anything valentine's themed
Directions
V for Valentine's Day is an easy seasonal craft to do with any age as a simple gluing project. If your child is older, get them more involved with the prep (cutting hearts out, tracing out the letter V...). If they are younger, help with the glue but give your child the space to decide where everything should be placed.
This craft was made even more love-like by adding a bit of red food colouring to the glue (mix well!) so it dries slightly coloured. Just be careful with the food colouring when mixing and try not to let the dyed glue on your child's clothes as it could stain.
Draw the letter V on construction paper for your child. Spread glue in the letter (do it for a very young toddler but most kids will want to do this independently so let them practise!) Place their Valentine's decorations in the gluey V to resemble the letter.
V is also for VOILA! Happy Valentine's Day!
You could adapt this craft to make smaller V's for Valentine cards.

Tip Jar
- Create a Lost and Found.
- Every house needs one, whether it's a basket, drawer or a container. When a family member finds something stray on a countertop he or she can toss it in the "lost and found." It's a great way to clean up, and it's the first place you'll look for a missing item, instead of spending time searching for it.
