Green Needham Has Two Exciting Initiatives Under Way for the Coming Year

Solar Energy at the RTS - Producing Clean Energy and Saving Money

 

In 2009, Green Needham first suggested the possibility of installing solar PV on top of the capped landfill at the Recycling and Transfer Station (RTS).  Since then, the cost of installing solar PV has declined, Massachusetts has implemented policies that make it one of the leading solar PV markets in the United States and several communities have taken the lead in demonstrating the feasibility of solar at closed landfills.
 

 The time is now for Needham to take advantage of this opportunity.  A 2 megawatt (MW) Solar panel system on top of Needham's capped landfill would generate approximately 2.3 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year, which is about 28% of the total electricity used by the Town's municipal and school buildings in FY 2011.  Read more ...

We can do even better. Home Energy Savings - it's a win-win opportunity

 

In the first year of our energy efficiency campaign, 377 Needham households have had their no-cost home energy assessments, and 103 have followed up with weatherization, such as insulation and air sealing. This translates to reduced utility bills -- an estimated total savings of $78,634 every year and an annual reduction of 393 tons of CO2
