Safe Driving Tip - YPD MotorsRear-end collisions exceeded 50,000 during 2007 and 43,000 during 2008 across Arizona, accounting for about 45% of all reported collisions those years[1]. A safe following distance in optimal driving conditions is generally considered to be a minimum of 2 seconds. At 35 miles per hour, the average motorist would require about 135 feet (the average length of 2 tractor trailers) to come to a complete stop. Motorist should do their part by maintaining a safe following distance, obeying speed limits

Last year the Yuma Fire Department responded to over 150 calls for people with symptoms of a stroke. According to the American Stroke Association, about 795,000 Americans each year suffer a new or recurrent stroke. That means on average, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Stroke kills more than 137,000 people a year. The sooner a stroke victim can get to the hospital, the sooner lifesaving treatment can begin, and time is critical. There are some very important warning signs of a stroke that you should always remember, to catch it early:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Call 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone you love has one or more of these signs. Our goal at the Yuma Fire Department is to get Paramedics that are trained in advanced life support to you in five minutes or less, but we need you to make that call. When dealing with strokes, "time lost is brain lost."

The Yuma Fire Department also partners with the Yuma Regional Medical Center's emergency department in following strict stroke protocols to ensure timely identification and treatment. YRMC partners with the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale via telemedicine for early neurological assessment for the potential of using clot busting drugs that may reduce long term disability for the most common type of stroke (ischemic).
