EthnoCorder: An Innovation in Mobile Data Collection and Use

Submitted by Nathan Horst, Help Channel Burundi | Burundi Participatory research is a key to understanding complex contexts, but utilizing the results for learning and decision-making is difficult. In December 2009, I began advising a local Burundian NGO on strengthening their knowledge management systems to support a food assistance project aimed at addressing the impact of war, famine, and long-term food insecurity in Burundi's rural provinces. This is the story of a KM initiative undertaken within a small local NGO in a small Sub-Saharan nation, both characterized by complexity, limited capacities, and opportunities for innovation. Connecting Arid Lands Communities With Knowledge

Submitted by Anthony Mugo, Arid Lands Information Network (ALIN) | Kenya The ALIN Maarifa (Knowledge) centers initiative involves delivering internet connectivity together with more traditional forms of information to communities living in some of the most remote parts of East Africa (Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania). A Maarifa center is a space: a room or a modified stand-alone shipping container equipped with at least five computers connected to broadband internet either through a GSM router or VSAT. Information is tailor-made to suit the needs of each community but it is predominantly on best practices in agriculture and livestock, environmental conservation (climate change), gender, HIV/AIDS and other livelihoods concerns. Evaluation in R&D management and knowledge use: a knowledge value mapping approach to currency accessible to the visually impaired

Author(s): Juan D Rogers    Organization: Research Evaluation Journal The dynamics of knowledge flow between R&D activities and a diverse set of actual or potential users is clearly critical to the realization of desired outcomes. However, current R&D evaluation frameworks focus almost exclusively on measurable discrete outputs and outcomes. We show that more general categories of the realization of values from the creation and utilization of knowledge are needed to make R&D evaluation more relevant to R&D program management...
