WANT TO VOLUNTEER?

As a volunteer you get to see the festival from the inside.  We try hard to ensure that festival volunteers only work 1/3 or the event and have the other 2/3rds of their time enjoying the music and festivities. Our volunteers range in age from 12 to 80+. You have skills and we need them to keep growing.

If you are interested in being a volunteer at our festival, please complete a volunteer application and return it to our office.  Our volunteer co-ordinator will be in touch with you.

BEOGA booked for the 2011 Festival!

Since the birth of Beoga in 2002, it has expanded the vocabulary of Irish Music with a unique accent of its own.

Beoga (Irish word for 'lively') are based in County Antrim,

Beoga

in the north of Ireland. The bedrock of their sound lies firmly within the Irish tradition. However, they are not afraid to incorporate other genres' nuances into their music. From bluesy riffs to Astor Piazzola-style jazz, to a raunchy New Orleans jamboree vibe, their music always returns to a wonderfully bouncy traditional sound. The result is traditional, with a huge sense of fun and adventure and it all works - wonderfully well.

Wall Street Journal dubs them "the most exciting new traditional band to emerge from Ireland this century."

James Keelaghan

James Keelaghan
James 11th CD, House of cards was released on October 12 2009 by Borealis records. 10 new originals, some of them co-writes with such folk luminaries as David Francey, Karine Polwart and Rose Cousins make it one of his best yet.

Called Canada's finest singer-songwriter by one of the most respected music journalists of the last 50 years, James Keelaghan is an artist who has proven to be a man for all seasons.

As the calendar pages have turned, for almost a quarter of a century now, this poet laureate of the folk and roots music world has gone about his work with a combination of passion, curiosity intent and intensity.

Possessed of an insatiable appetite for finding the next unique story line, Keelaghan forges his pieces with brilliant craftsmanship and monogrammed artistic vision, making him one of the most distinctive and readily identifiable voices on both the Canadian and international singer-songwriter scenes.

Gabriel Yacoub

 Gabriel Yacoub

Gabriel Yacoubis now recognized as one of France's foremost folk / pop artists, with more than 30 releases on labels throughout Europe, North America and Japan.

Yacoub first came to the fore as teenage back-up guitarist and singer with Brittany's pioneering celtic harpist Alan Stivell. In the early 1970s
Stivell's blend of rock and the old world inspired Yacoub to form Malicorne, a band that was soon to become a landmark in contemporary french music.

Unearthing some of France's finest jewels from its own traditional music, Malicorne offered us their remarkably fresh approach, and succeeded in bringing this music into the limelight at a time when french ears were tuning into America for inspiration.

For ten years, Malicorne revived the magic of what some today call "world music" by integrating currently popular instruments with crumhorns, bagpipes, and hurdy-gurdies, and stunning vocal arrangements. They transformed well-chosen traditional and medieval ballads, through unusual and powerful voicings, into modern songs relevant to our times.

With Malicorne at its height, he launched a solo career, and developed his own musical personality though still drawing on his traditional background. Yacoub returned to his acoustic roots in 1990. The emotional strength and richness of his writing and vocals are accompanied by beautifully arranged string quartets, bagpipes and guitar.

Hans Theessink

 Hans Theesink

We've already had an American in Paris, but a Dutchman in Vienna? And one who has dedicated himself, body and soul, to American blues and roots music? Okay, Hans Theessink (pronounced Tay-sink) did not pick the easiest way to do this, but he has done so with a certain degree of
single-mindedness.

Hans Theessink has become one of the most sought-after artists of the international blues scene. He is more or less constantly "on tour" and plays an average of 200 concerts a year - a modern day troubadour and entertainer who keeps on spellbinding audiences all over the world with his rich and emotional sounds.

Above all, the country blues with its earthy and heartfelt sound impressed Hans Theessink and played a major role in his development as a musician. His roots are unmistakenly in the blues, but has also been influenced by countless other aspects of roots music. This musical variety has become a trademark of Hans Theessink, who as a songwriter has succeeded in building bridges to the present in addressing issues which reflect the reality of the here and now.

Hans is probably Europe's bluesexport Nr.1 - one of the top blues and roots musicians worldwide who has entertained audiences around the globe during a musical career that spans over more than 35 years. The world's leading bluespaper - US magazine Blues Revue wrote: "Hans Theessink is an international blues treasure. He is one of the world's pre-eminent country pickers and his warm baritone expresses blues".
